Yes, many thought I was a bit overzealous when I said that Delgado has been better than Howard this year, but I stand by that claim and that is likely to remain true over the course of the season. Delgado's OPS+ of 120 is actually really respectable this year and Ryan Howard has simply not hit as well as him with a 110 OPS+. More RBIs? Sure. More homers? Sure.
If this were MVP voting that might be all that mattered, but it is not. It is real life and no matter what anyone tries to tell you, the Mets first baseman has outplayed the 2007 MVP. Again, if you asked me who I wanted for 2008 through 2012, it would be a no brainer, but for this season alone, you can keep Howard and his iron mitt.
In fact, Delgado has played so well of late, I would actually consider bringing him back and picking up his option while Mike Carp gets some more ABs in the minor leagues...yeah I said it. Ossy just fell off of his chair, but let us all maintain some sanity.

Pedro to the pen? It can't hurt. In fact, it might be a good idea for the remainder of the season since he has been so brittle and the Mets could use some relief help.

They have scored as much as the o' so talked about Philly offense and are just fiiiiiine. I'll take the Met front four over anyone in the Phillies have with the exception of Cole Hamels and the Marlins rotation has a Blanton-esque ERA.....the Mets are not going to be chasing anyone. That is my bold statement for the day.

That being said, he has sucked major monkey balls for the better part of two seasons. Eventually he is going to cool off and then we will see how he deals with that cold stretch. Because it's gonna come. And if he can't maintain some consistency during that stretch and then fall back into old habits, well then is one electric month of July worth bringing him back?
We'll have to wait and see on that one I guess.
And in other news: with the exception of Wagner, the Mets bullpen is in serious need of some assistance. These pricks can't even register an out let alone get out of an inning. Sanchez may have made it out of his inning last night without giving up a run, but boy did he look awful doing it. It seems that ever since the 10-game winning streak ended, nobody in that pen (except Wags) has the ability to finish off opposing hitters. 0-2, 1-2, and then it either gets stretched out into a walk, or the batter works out a hit.
Not good. Especially with the Mets wanting to limit Pelfrey's innings pitched and Maine's... well, problems. Whatever the fuck those problems may be.
Don't be so glum...Delgado is feeling it. Don't deny him his glory. He has been helping out greatly in this stretch.

ReplyDeleteDelgado was a monster year after year, his production fell off so fast that everyone was surprised and assumed an injury, he comes back as a monster and some people still can't take the fork out of his ass. Are people (I'm talking to you Ossy) forgetting that he was one of the most feared and prolific hitters in baseball for a decade? But one good month is suddenly an anomoly. I'm not saying that he can still carry a team, but he shouldn't have to carry the Mets. He is leading the team in HR and may very well finish with a 30/100 season. He is a great hitter who had to make an adjustment and he did. I admit that I lost hope, but none of us should be surprised that a hitter of Delgado's caliber and intelligence made that adjustment.
Now we just have to worry about pitching again. Shit.
One thing that Delgado is doing is hitting the ball where it's pitched. Low, outside pitches are being poked into Left Field. This is huge, because teams can't use the full blown shift on him. Plus, he's hit some out to left field.

ReplyDeleteBut its worth mentioning that in the field his lack of athleticism is such that you just have to laugh to keep from crying.
Last night, for instance, he couldn't beat the runner to the bag (you could blame the pitcher but he just looked like a sad old man after the play) and I believe I saw at least one more catchable pop up dented the turf in the first base foul area. He has made some nice snags of Wonderboy's throws and all, but last night was a reminder of how stiff he can be. I'd say that the right fielder has a better chance of getting to pop ups near the dugout than Carlos.
I wouldn't consider bringing back Delgado. No matter what he does. History tells us that's not a good idea.

History also tells us that signing Texiera long term is not a good idea, either. Delgado would only be for one year - no long term commitment. I'll take one year of Delgado at league average or a little worse than six years of Texiera who, by the way, is an inferior player to Delgado when he was the same age.

Delgado's resurgence is stunning if you compare it to what he looked like during the first month or so of the season. It's like he had a stroke and learned how to walk again.

I know he doesn't throw 100 or anything, but he could be serviceable. Then again, if Maine's out, he may be needed to make some starts.
I say OK to Delgado for one more year -- so long as their is an insurance plan in Carp to backup should he completely go cold.
I also say no to Teixeira for $20 mil/year. No to CC Sabathia for $20 mil/year. And say no to resigning Pedro for anything more than 7 or 8 million, as much as I love him.
I do, however, say yes to resigning Ollie, and say yes to signing Mr. Ben Sheets -- so long as he can stay healthy down the stretch and prove he's not going to break down after a few starts.
And I'm like 95% sure that Nady and Marte are both under control through '09, which is why Cashman was more susceptible to make the move he did. (Fuck Tabata - massively overrated.)

He's a great fielder, and powerful, but he's never really led a team, and, especially in New York, the pressure he'd face during one of his two-month cold streaks, getting paid 130 mil, would be tough.

Dodgers made a "win now" move. The only thing that bothers me from that perspective is that despite LaRoche not being able tohold his own this year, he was still the team's #1 prospect, and they dealt him for two months of a rent-a-player and a couple of draft picks.
But hey, maybe they will improve upon the 4.2 runs/game (13th NL, 25th MLB), the 71 homers (15th NL, 26th MLB), and the .255 average (9th NL, 20th, MLB). They allow the least amount of runs per game, so this might help them establish some solidifying in the lineup.
The Pirates will suck for a few years. But if the guys they've been getting pan out to be half-way decent and their draft picks rise through the system like they're projected, they'll have a nice looking team in 2011. Outfield of McCutchen, McClouth, and Brandon Moss. And with Pedro Alvarez at 3rd, maybe LaRoche will end up at 1st.
Also, I'm disappointed Omar couldn't make a move. But if the asking price for an Ibanez was F-Mart and Niese, then he had no choice but to sit things out until waivers later in August.
I say let Delgado test the market and see what he can get. I could see him coming back at 7-9 million with an incentive laden-deal.

Beltran may very well wind up with 100 RBIs when this season is said and done, but I'm watching the games and what ever stats this guy ends the season with will mean nothing cause he's actually been less clutch than DW. Reyes=electric. Beltran=bleh.

I'm not out to kill the guy. Fact is, he's one of my favs. Got an away jersey with his name and everything! It's a total love fest. But the fact is that DW is not coming through in key situations this season. Many of his hits have come with bases empty or with a runner on first. He's hitting into a boat load of double plays, and is it possible for him to have a comfortable at-bat rather than constantly having to work from behind with an 0-2 count?
Take the rose-colored glasses off. I want to be optimistic just like everyone else. With the exception of one month in July, the Mets have played sub-par baseball going all the way back to last season. And with the third highest payroll in MLB, very high expectations dating back to 2006, and a new stadium next year that will undoubtedly mean even higher ticket prices... well, you still find being 2 back and only 6 games above .500 acceptable?
For this team with all of it's "talent" and high expectations? You'll "take that right now"?

ReplyDeleteYou can't kill David Wright -- he's the most productive guy on the field day in and day out. And yes, I will be the first he was completely at fault for that debacle of a game Wednesday night. But 9 times out of 10, if you ask me do I want David Wright up in a clutch situation, yes I sure do. The guy's on pace for 30, 110.
For stat heads: Wright's RC (Runs Created) and RC/Game (Runs Created per Game) are slightly down this year, but in line with his '05 and '06 campaigns. Furthermore, his OWP (Offensive Winning Percentage) and BtRuns and BtWin are in line with his '05 and '06 seasons too.
If you don't know what any of the above is, think of it this way -- he was going to regress in some area coming off a season in which he hit .325 with 30 homers. And this year, it's his average. Other than that, he's right on par with what we've come to expect from him. Clutch or not, he's solid.
Also -- with a 'pen thats been 100% shit as of late; a hurt Church, Pedro, Wagner and Maine; and an outfield corner slot that's been filled by a guy who hasn't been productive since 1999, it's time to temper those high expectations.
I thought, like everyone else, they'd be in first by 5 or 6 at this time with the addition of Johan. Things happened -- they sucked for much of the first three months. The injuries piled up. Willie.
Right now, I'll take two games out, as sad as that is. I used up all my energy killing this team months ago.
Oh yeah, and why the fuck is Brian Stokes starting this weekend instead of Niese?

The Mets DL could field an entire major league team. The corner OF are on the DL, the starting 2b, the closer, and the #2 starter. They started three (#3) wet behind the ears rookies last night. Take a step back and look at the big picture and it's not so bad. Look what happened when the Skankees got healthy last year. I'm not totally optimistic that they will make the playoffs this year but I'm also not doom and gloom. There's a lot of "ifs" but if this team ever gets healthy this year they will be fine.

The fact Beane's teams are playoff-bound or close to it every single season tells you something about stats. Sure, they haven't won a WS, but they are sure as hell the best when it comes to acquiring or drafting relative "unknowns" and turning them into stars.

ReplyDeleteHatin' on the bullpen? Can't stand in the way of that. They have absolutely sucked. But there is plenty of blame to go around. There are lots of examples of what long term abuse does to a bullpen. This is the same cast of charactors from 2006 with little change. Heilman, Feliciano, and Sanchez have been overused for going on three years now (yeah, I know Dirty was out for like 1.5 years). I blame Omar for not doing a good job of retooling the pen, Willie for mismanagment, and, recently, Jerry for not letting stud starters go past the magic 100 pitch count.

ReplyDeleteI also heard that sidd threw a perfect game while pitching for Adelphi's JV squad. Best part is that he accomplished this amazing achievement by throwing the ball with his bare foot (the one without the hiking boot), and miraculously managed to strike out all 27 batters on just 80 pitches. Word is that with two down in the top of the ninth, and one strike on the final batter, the home plate ump decided that strike two would be enough. The opposing team did not argue the game-ending second strike. Instead they all boarded the team bus and promptly drove it off the nearest bridge.

Gary and Keith said that the Mets' run differential was something like +89 in the first 3 innings, -1 for innings 4-6, and -53 or something like that for innings 7-9. It's not just the bullpen, but the Mets' inability to score in the later innings. Tuesday was just the latest example of this.

I can't help but watch this game, but that's only because of my deep love for what the game used to be. The game that I grew up watching. And of course I am so deeply tied to this team.
I just wish I could walk away from it all. And that has very little to do with the Mets performance. I just don't like what this game has become.
