Delgado > Howard

Yes, many thought I was a bit overzealous when I said that Delgado has been better than Howard this year, but I stand by that claim and that is likely to remain true over the course of the season. Delgado's OPS+ of 120 is actually really respectable this year and Ryan Howard has simply not hit as well as him with a 110 OPS+. More RBIs? Sure. More homers? Sure.

If this were MVP voting that might be all that mattered, but it is not. It is real life and no matter what anyone tries to tell you, the Mets first baseman has outplayed the 2007 MVP. Again, if you asked me who I wanted for 2008 through 2012, it would be a no brainer, but for this season alone, you can keep Howard and his iron mitt.

In fact, Delgado has played so well of late, I would actually consider bringing him back and picking up his option while Mike Carp gets some more ABs in the minor leagues...yeah I said it. Ossy just fell off of his chair, but let us all maintain some sanity.

* * *

  • Not that Maine has been lighting the world on fire, but this is bad. Really bad.

"I'm fine," Maine told the interim manager.

    "You're not fine," Manuel replied.

  • Pedro to the pen? It can't hurt. In fact, it might be a good idea for the remainder of the season since he has been so brittle and the Mets could use some relief help.

  • We don't need no stinkin' bats. With Tatis playing like an All-Star, Church working his way back, and Delgado playing like it is the early 2000s, who needs to pick up a bat? They have scored as much as the o' so talked about Philly offense and are just fiiiiiine. I'll take the Met front four over anyone in the Phillies have with the exception of Cole Hamels and the Marlins rotation has a Blanton-esque ERA.....the Mets are not going to be chasing anyone. That is my bold statement for the day.

  • Posada is done for the season.

"After speaking with Brian and Joe, we thought it was best for me — and the team — to have the surgery now," Posada said. "I've always taken pride in being there for my team and playing every day with them. With Xavier here now, there isn't as much pressure on me to return."

somebody has been smoking that crack i see. like i said before, one good month doesnt undo the bullshit he's given since last year.

btw, i thinked i missed the presentation of delgado's gold glove.

posada looks like another cashman signing gone bad. this guy makes so many bad moves its not even funny. but he'll get praise for the marte/nady trade (even though it spoke more of the pirates stupidity than yankee savvy) and his overhyped farm system.

    2. If Jeter can win one, so can Delgado.

He was average last year and much better this year...jump on the Delgado love train!

You have to give him credit for that deal, but I agree, he makes oodles of terrible moves.

Gado has been white-motherfuckin-hot. Not... hot.

      WHITE-MOTHERFUCKIN-HOT!

That being said, he has sucked major monkey balls for the better part of two seasons. Eventually he is going to cool off and then we will see how he deals with that cold stretch. Because it's gonna come. And if he can't maintain some consistency during that stretch and then fall back into old habits, well then is one electric month of July worth bringing him back?

We'll have to wait and see on that one I guess.

And in other news: with the exception of Wagner, the Mets bullpen is in serious need of some assistance. These pricks can't even register an out let alone get out of an inning. Sanchez may have made it out of his inning last night without giving up a run, but boy did he look awful doing it. It seems that ever since the 10-game winning streak ended, nobody in that pen (except Wags) has the ability to finish off opposing hitters. 0-2, 1-2, and then it either gets stretched out into a walk, or the batter works out a hit.

Not good. Especially with the Mets wanting to limit Pelfrey's innings pitched and Maine's... well, problems. Whatever the fuck those problems may be.

    4. Don't be so glum...Delgado is feeling it. Don't deny him his glory. He has been helping out greatly in this stretch.

One electric month is worth bringing him back if the alternative is giving Tex $20 per year over seven years....

      Is Nady a free agent?

The bullpen is terrible and scary. Mostly terrible though.

    5. Mike - glad your back. We need more posts!

Delgado was a monster year after year, his production fell off so fast that everyone was surprised and assumed an injury, he comes back as a monster and some people still can't take the fork out of his ass. Are people (I'm talking to you Ossy) forgetting that he was one of the most feared and prolific hitters in baseball for a decade? But one good month is suddenly an anomoly. I'm not saying that he can still carry a team, but he shouldn't have to carry the Mets. He is leading the team in HR and may very well finish with a 30/100 season. He is a great hitter who had to make an adjustment and he did. I admit that I lost hope, but none of us should be surprised that a hitter of Delgado's caliber and intelligence made that adjustment.

Now we just have to worry about pitching again. Shit.

      ReplyDelete
    6. One thing that Delgado is doing is hitting the ball where it's pitched. Low, outside pitches are being poked into Left Field. This is huge, because teams can't use the full blown shift on him. Plus, he's hit some out to left field.

As a Delgado apologist, I welcome everyone back to the bandwagon.

Feliciano should be getting the extended outings, and Schonenweis should go back to the LOOGY role.

I love Delgado, and at the plate his rebirth has been a thing of beauty.
But its worth mentioning that in the field his lack of athleticism is such that you just have to laugh to keep from crying.
Last night, for instance, he couldn't beat the runner to the bag (you could blame the pitcher but he just looked like a sad old man after the play) and I believe I saw at least one more catchable pop up dented the turf in the first base foul area. He has made some nice snags of Wonderboy's throws and all, but last night was a reminder of how stiff he can be. I'd say that the right fielder has a better chance of getting to pop ups near the dugout than Carlos.

      i remember what delgado did.

i also remember that his bat has looked slow. i also remember that he did alot of work in the steroid (& greenie) era.

players always hit that wall at one point in their career. he looked his age and looked washed up for the better part of a year and a half. forgive me for assuming that his sorry ass is done. i wanna see where you guys are when he is hitting .183 in august

resigning delgado = resigning jorge posada

      ReplyDelete
    10. History also tells us that signing Texiera long term is not a good idea, either. Delgado would only be for one year - no long term commitment. I'll take one year of Delgado at league average or a little worse than six years of Texiera who, by the way, is an inferior player to Delgado when he was the same age.

The comparison to Posada makes no sense. Posada = 4/52 (4/52!!!!! OMG how stupid are the Yankees?). Delgado would be a one year commitment. I'm not saying the Mets should do it, I'm just sayin'.

    11. metsfanincincy.....work is killing me. I will try and post more.

I think we all agree Delgado is terrible in the field, but so is Howard...they cancel each other out.

Benny...I have noted your suggestion to not bring him back, but will not pay attention to it.

      Ossy....1 year! Not four...big difference.

    12. Anonymous2:46 PM

Delgado's resurgence is stunning if you compare it to what he looked like during the first month or so of the season. It's like he had a stroke and learned how to walk again.

Omar must add someone for the 'pen in the next couple of days. He has no choice. I was wondering why Niese wasn't getting a look at for end-of-year bullpen work ... I know he doesn't throw 100 or anything, but he could be serviceable. Then again, if Maine's out, he may be needed to make some starts.

I say OK to Delgado for one more year -- so long as their is an insurance plan in Carp to backup should he completely go cold.

I also say no to Teixeira for $20 mil/year. No to CC Sabathia for $20 mil/year. And say no to resigning Pedro for anything more than 7 or 8 million, as much as I love him.

I do, however, say yes to resigning Ollie, and say yes to signing Mr. Ben Sheets -- so long as he can stay healthy down the stretch and prove he's not going to break down after a few starts.

And I'm like 95% sure that Nady and Marte are both under control through '09, which is why Cashman was more susceptible to make the move he did. (Fuck Tabata - massively overrated.)

delgado in his first 6 full yrs in mlb avg a 142 OPS+ (from 23-29 yrs old) while texiera had a 141 OPS+ (22-28 yrs old).

sounds like a push to me.

oh but i forgot to mention how texiera is a switch hitter who splits are pretty even. and he is a gold glove caliber 1B. delgado in his best days could sniff tex's jock strap.

btw i didnt say sign tex

signing ben sheets = signing el duque

nady/marte are def under contract through next year. this is a good trade for the rest of the playoff contenders in a sense that it should lower trade demands

I would say yes to Sheets and Ollie, but that seems PRICEY.

What about Niese or Parnell getting a tryout? Maaaaaybe they can help out in the pen.

    21. Anonymous9:24 PM

Whoever signs Tex is getting a bad deal. The guy is inconsistent, frequently bad for months, but with a couple of crazy hot streaks that make his final numbers look studly. He's a great fielder, and powerful, but he's never really led a team, and, especially in New York, the pressure he'd face during one of his two-month cold streaks, getting paid 130 mil, would be tough.

CC going on the market makes me wish we hadn't signed Johan. The guy is powerful, and his arm is jello. But Fred's already got a few eggs, and just one basket.

Sheets is very interesting. He's a real gamer, and some of his injuries have been flukey.

      ReplyDelete
    22. Anonymous9:53 AM

      Mike,

CC is listed 290 lbs. So he's about 305.

You'd give him a seven year deal with massive contract money?

If they lose O.P., Sheets is a must. He's the second best guy out there after CC. Johan, Sheets, Maine, Pelfrey, Pedro/Niese/Free Agent? Solid. Then again, if you keep O.P., then all is well, and with Sheets, they are dominant.

MLB.com has learned that a third team could be added to the trade. In this scenario, Ramirez would go to the Marlins, Hermida would end up in Pittsburgh, and Jason Bay would wind up in Boston.

Wtf? Ballsy move by Florida and Boston.

      ReplyDelete
    24. Anonymous10:02 PM

worst trade ive ever seen. they give away an allstar. pay his salary. give away prospects. and take on salary.

boston has been a calculated organization under theo and the other guys. they let emotion force them into a bad trade. they couldve kept manny, won big, let him go somewhere else, not pay bay next year and collect two draft pics

      ReplyDelete
    25. Anonymous11:11 PM

In Boston's defense, Manny just didn't give a shit anymore. He stopped running to first base and instead ran all over the press with his mouth.

Bay is only making $7.5 next year, and is better defensively than Manny (though he's no Gold Glove in the field).

Dodgers made a "win now" move. The only thing that bothers me from that perspective is that despite LaRoche not being able tohold his own this year, he was still the team's #1 prospect, and they dealt him for two months of a rent-a-player and a couple of draft picks.

But hey, maybe they will improve upon the 4.2 runs/game (13th NL, 25th MLB), the 71 homers (15th NL, 26th MLB), and the .255 average (9th NL, 20th, MLB). They allow the least amount of runs per game, so this might help them establish some solidifying in the lineup.

The Pirates will suck for a few years. But if the guys they've been getting pan out to be half-way decent and their draft picks rise through the system like they're projected, they'll have a nice looking team in 2011. Outfield of McCutchen, McClouth, and Brandon Moss. And with Pedro Alvarez at 3rd, maybe LaRoche will end up at 1st.

Also, I'm disappointed Omar couldn't make a move. But if the asking price for an Ibanez was F-Mart and Niese, then he had no choice but to sit things out until waivers later in August.

      ReplyDelete
    26. Anonymous12:27 AM

I say let Delgado test the market and see what he can get. I could see him coming back at 7-9 million with an incentive laden-deal.

      ReplyDelete
    27. Bay's numbers will improve with 81 games in Fenway. Sox gave up Hansen, who has looked terrible all three years up there. Paps is playing the role of closer, so they don't need Hansen. Brandon Moss is the real deal. Plus he can play 1b.

The Sawx will miss those 2 first rounders, but Manny made it impossible to keep him. Headline in the Hartford Courant: 'Epstein Cures Cancer'.

Delgado for one more year is fine with me.

I'm glad that Omar is not mortgaging the future for a rental, although I would have loved if they had gotten Nady back.

Even though the Manny trade seems to have benefitted all three teams so far, I sure hope Omar doesn't go after Manny in the offseason.

Bay is hitting .364 for the Sawx so far, and made a nice play in left field. Manny is hitting .615 for the Dodgers. What a fraud, the Mets do not need a player like that.

Note: Hansen took the loss for Pitt yesterday, I don't know if he will ever amount to anything, but LaRoche homered, and Moss had a hit.

Well the 77-84 1991 team also won 10 consecutive games.

Delgado is back to his first half form.

Wright has the softest 84 RBIs I've ever seen. God forbid he actually gets a hit with runners in scoring position, or when the team is behind and desperately needs their #3 hitter to drive in key runs.

Beltran may very well wind up with 100 RBIs when this season is said and done, but I'm watching the games and what ever stats this guy ends the season with will mean nothing cause he's actually been less clutch than DW. Reyes=electric. Beltran=bleh.

Snyder needs to take a seat alongside Castillo. Unfortunately Castro got pummeled and I haven't heard what his status is.

Bullpen (and I mean the whole fucking bullpen) sucks sweaty donkey balls.

This is a team that year after year continues to play down to it's competition. Getting swept by the Astros? Really?!? Getting swept in a 4-game series by the Padres earlier in the season (which BTW takes a lot of effort), and now struggling mightily just to try and take this series tomorrow?

      Wow.

They will miss the playoffs for the second straight season folks. Make no mistake about it. And when they do, I am very curious to see how ownership handles issues such as Omar's position as GM and pricing for Next season at the new park. Already had the balls to raise prices 25% after the worst collapse in baseball history. Those cocksuckers would have to have boulders in their trousers to raise them after missing the playoffs for the second time in two seasons.

      Good call on that today.

Even better call on that AFTER he manages to somehow muster up a rare clutch hit when his team really needed it. Say, you must be one hell of an arm-chair quarterback!

I'm not out to kill the guy. Fact is, he's one of my favs. Got an away jersey with his name and everything! It's a total love fest. But the fact is that DW is not coming through in key situations this season. Many of his hits have come with bases empty or with a runner on first. He's hitting into a boat load of double plays, and is it possible for him to have a comfortable at-bat rather than constantly having to work from behind with an 0-2 count?

Take the rose-colored glasses off. I want to be optimistic just like everyone else. With the exception of one month in July, the Mets have played sub-par baseball going all the way back to last season. And with the third highest payroll in MLB, very high expectations dating back to 2006, and a new stadium next year that will undoubtedly mean even higher ticket prices... well, you still find being 2 back and only 6 games above .500 acceptable?

For this team with all of it's "talent" and high expectations? You'll "take that right now"?

I have full season tickets, so I've been watching plenty of games.

You can't kill David Wright -- he's the most productive guy on the field day in and day out. And yes, I will be the first he was completely at fault for that debacle of a game Wednesday night. But 9 times out of 10, if you ask me do I want David Wright up in a clutch situation, yes I sure do. The guy's on pace for 30, 110.

For stat heads: Wright's RC (Runs Created) and RC/Game (Runs Created per Game) are slightly down this year, but in line with his '05 and '06 campaigns. Furthermore, his OWP (Offensive Winning Percentage) and BtRuns and BtWin are in line with his '05 and '06 seasons too.

If you don't know what any of the above is, think of it this way -- he was going to regress in some area coming off a season in which he hit .325 with 30 homers. And this year, it's his average. Other than that, he's right on par with what we've come to expect from him. Clutch or not, he's solid.

Also -- with a 'pen thats been 100% shit as of late; a hurt Church, Pedro, Wagner and Maine; and an outfield corner slot that's been filled by a guy who hasn't been productive since 1999, it's time to temper those high expectations.

I thought, like everyone else, they'd be in first by 5 or 6 at this time with the addition of Johan. Things happened -- they sucked for much of the first three months. The injuries piled up. Willie.

Right now, I'll take two games out, as sad as that is. I used up all my energy killing this team months ago.

    43. Anonymous9:32 AM

Oh yeah, and why the fuck is Brian Stokes starting this weekend instead of Niese?

Enough Nelson Figueroa, Brian Stokes, Jose Lima 5th starter bullshit from this team. If you have a guy who has pitched well at all levels of the minors, bring him up for a start. You have NOTHING to lose.

      ReplyDelete
    44. Just because you have a payroll that's third in the majors doesn't mean the guys you are paying are worth the money. Think the yankers in the 1980's. No matter how much you pay Steve Kemp, it will not improve his play. The Mets overpaid for Beltran, Pedro, and, yes, even Johan.

I don't know why the high expectations - Willie is second all time in Mets managers in winning percentage - .544.

hey tc, you forgot Brian Lawrence and Chan Ho Park.

      ReplyDelete
    45. The Mets DL could field an entire major league team. The corner OF are on the DL, the starting 2b, the closer, and the #2 starter. They started three (#3) wet behind the ears rookies last night. Take a step back and look at the big picture and it's not so bad. Look what happened when the Skankees got healthy last year. I'm not totally optimistic that they will make the playoffs this year but I'm also not doom and gloom. There's a lot of "ifs" but if this team ever gets healthy this year they will be fine.

I liked it a lot better when there were no anonymous comments.

Stats, stats, and more stats! Ya know who else loves stats?

Billy Beane! Know how many championships Sir Sabermetrics has won?

      Zero!

BTW, Jose Reyes has been this teams most productive player day in and day out. Not David Wright. And once again for all the thin-skinned: I am a big DW fan. He is a tremendous talent whom I hope stays a Met for the remainder of his career. But that doesn't mean that he is beyond criticism.

Stats don't tell the whole story.

And metsfanincincy, you can like what ever it is you want. I am not attacking any of you here. But I sure am catching a shit load of flack for speaking the truth. Sorry the team we root for is nowhere near bring championship caliber, but don't pile up on me for that!

The fact Beane's teams are playoff-bound or close to it every single season tells you something about stats. Sure, they haven't won a WS, but they are sure as hell the best when it comes to acquiring or drafting relative "unknowns" and turning them into stars.

A's Fun Facts (stolen shamelessly offline):
      -- The A's payroll is $47.9M
-- The only person on the A's roster guaranteed more than $1MM after 2008 are Eric Chavez & Bobby Crosby. Everybody else is on 1 year deals, or cost-controlled at discounts for the next 2-6 seasons.
-- The A's have arguably the most roster flexibility and cost-controlled major league talent.
-- The A's have positioned themselves extremely well for investing in amateur drafts, and international signings (See: Michel Inoa).
-- The A's also took over #1 spot for the youngest average age in baseball. And still have the 4th best run differential in the AL.

      Impressive. Even if they haven't won a World Series. The A's have made the playoffs in 2000, 2001, 2002, 2003, 2006. The Mets? 1999, 2000, 2006.

      I love stats.

I had erased Mr. Lawrence and Chan Ho permanently from my memory banks. Thank you for reminding me they ever donned the blue and orange.

Also, Dan Murphy? Stud. I am curious to see if he will continue to put up solid numbers the second time through the league ... but so far, so good for the rook. He just needs to learn some 2b in the off-season.

You know your team sucks when they blow a 4 run lead to the Pirates and the bullpen gives up 3 (and counting...) in the 9th.

      FUCK AARON HEILMAN.

    53. You know your team sucks when Doug Mientkiewicz who's batting third for the Pirates beats your ass.

I want Heilman's email address to send him a note telling him how much of a bullshit, gutless, pussy fuck he is. FUCK him. Are you fucking kidding me???? What a pathetic joke he is.

I want Heilman's email address to send him a note telling him how much of a bullshit, gutless, pussy fuck he is. FUCK him. Are you fucking kidding me???? What a pathetic joke he is.

Just his address? The guy who saved back to back games including one where he went the 8th and 9th getting 6 consecutive outs? That guy? Just his address?

How bout Sanchez? How bout Smith? Show maybe? You don't wanna tell them what bullshit, gutless, pussy fucks they are?

Heilman sucked. He's sucked a lot this season. But whether any of you wanna admit it or not, he has been the least suckiest of all of them (not counting Wags) since the AS break. Not saying much, but it's true.

And again, another reason why this team won't even sniff the playoffs let alone a WS birth.

      ReplyDelete
    55. Anonymous5:32 PM

      Least suckiest.

That pretty much sums it up.

Aaron: 2-7, 5.74 ERA (jumped over 1 run since July 25th), 1.46 WHIP, 9 homers surrendered.

That's a whole lot of suck.

We kind of need someone without any suck. Or with a very minimal level of suck.

I'll take anything short of bringing back Johnny Franco at this point (sarcasm!! relax, anons!!)

      Get well soon, Billy.

    62. Hatin' on the bullpen? Can't stand in the way of that. They have absolutely sucked. But there is plenty of blame to go around. There are lots of examples of what long term abuse does to a bullpen. This is the same cast of charactors from 2006 with little change. Heilman, Feliciano, and Sanchez have been overused for going on three years now (yeah, I know Dirty was out for like 1.5 years). I blame Omar for not doing a good job of retooling the pen, Willie for mismanagment, and, recently, Jerry for not letting stud starters go past the magic 100 pitch count.

I don't blame anyone for getting down on Heilman right now, it's hard not to, but Aaron Heilman has been carrying the heavy load for years now and the abuse is starting to show.

      ReplyDelete
    63. And another thing - Why is a team with spent, ineffective bullpen carrying three catchers???

And where the hell is Mike????

Sidd, you threw 168mph and wore a hiker's boot while pitching ... of course it is.

      ReplyDelete
    66. Anonymous4:58 PM

I also heard that sidd threw a perfect game while pitching for Adelphi's JV squad. Best part is that he accomplished this amazing achievement by throwing the ball with his bare foot (the one without the hiking boot), and miraculously managed to strike out all 27 batters on just 80 pitches. Word is that with two down in the top of the ninth, and one strike on the final batter, the home plate ump decided that strike two would be enough. The opposing team did not argue the game-ending second strike. Instead they all boarded the team bus and promptly drove it off the nearest bridge.

But that's just what I heard...

Very fortunate to be facing a clueless ballclub. Santana was not on his game, and yet he only gives up 3 runs.

    70. Gary and Keith said that the Mets' run differential was something like +89 in the first 3 innings, -1 for innings 4-6, and -53 or something like that for innings 7-9. It's not just the bullpen, but the Mets' inability to score in the later innings. Tuesday was just the latest example of this.

I had forgot all about the 80 pitch game. I remember that our team went to help pull the opposing team out of the river.

God, I'm so frustrated watching this shit. Up 7-0, they can't hold a lead, can't score after the 4th inning. It's crazy.

And as I speak Heilman and Schoenweis are warming up. GREAT! If they lose, I may not be posting for a while because I will have thrown my laptop out the window.

I planned my annual big trip to Shea from upstate for Friday. Got the tickets and everything. Made convoluted plans to get down there. Took Friday off in exchange for working Saturday. Awesome, right?

Nope, my tickets are for Saturday, so I'm screwed. No way I can go Sat. If any of you guys want to go to Saturday's game and have Friday tickets, I'll trade you in a heartbeat. Let me know ASAP and we'll get it done.

      Eight pitchers for nine innings.

A-hem. Allow me to repeat that:

      EIGHT PITCHERS FOR NINE INNINGS

I can't help but watch this game, but that's only because of my deep love for what the game used to be. The game that I grew up watching. And of course I am so deeply tied to this team.

I just wish I could walk away from it all. And that has very little to do with the Mets performance. I just don't like what this game has become.

Eight fucking pitchers for a nine inning game. And even the lowest guy on the totem pole in that pen gets paid a pretty nice chunk of change. Fuck, I can go in there and do what these cocksuckers are doing right now!

      What a joke.
