"Being a Mets fan really sucks"

Those words did not come from my mouth, but came to me from my friend's fingers via a text message during the 9th inning of last night's game. For three consecutive innings, the Mets had a prime scoring opportunity only to come away with one run during those three innings. Keep in mind, it was a known fact the Phillies were opening the door for the Mets to close the gap during those chances and that this game was a golden opportunity to even up the loss column.

Of course, we are plagued Met fans damned to never to derive any sort of enjoyment from our favorite professional baseball team. Not us, we are doomed for a lifetime of let downs and not just any old let down. Let downs of enormous proportions. What will it take to reverse these misfortunes? If had those answers, I would certainly present them. However, there is nothing else we can do but grin and bear it.

Missed opportunities were abundant and now the Mets are in a Wild Card tie with the Brewers and in second place. They came into the game with a 72%+ chance of making the playoffs and had a 5-1 lead only to lose by three runs and end up with a 54%+ chance of making the playoffs.

Ticklish? Yeah, I think it would be safe to say things are ticklish and I think it is safe to say I watching the Mets last night was another poor allocation of my time. With Pedro up tonight and the Mets holding an open audition for Saturday's 2nd game, it is not exactly a a rosy outlook with a team that no one really wants to play coming to town this weekend and the team that knocked the Mets out of the playoffs last season.

* * *

  • The Mets will stay on WFAN and I guess that is good. There are no other stations with any sort of Met fan broadcasters in prominent roles.

  • Why must the Met fans not be allowed to boo? I am not a big boo person and have only booed for Roger Cedeno, but seriously. Last night I can forgive anyone with a temptation to boo.

"As everyone knows, this is a what-have-you-done-for-me-lately town and lately we haven't gotten the job done," David Wright said. "There's a lot of frustration. There's frustration with the fans, there's frustration in the stands, there's frustration in the dugout.

I am mostly frustrated because this is the second year in a row I might be giving the Mets a micro-loan for the payment of my playoff tickets that may never get used. If they refunded the money automatically, which they should do, it wouldn't be an issue, but they make it a process to get any money back. Typically that would not be an issue as I just put it towards my next season tickets, but we know that there will probably not be any partial season packages and frankly if they fail to make the playoffs again after a terrible collapse, I probably would not want to get them again.

  • Short rest for Johan? They don't need it. Some clutch hitting would have be fine and Johan cannot do that. This is on the offense to help this team make the playoffs and not Johan.

  • Evan Weiner is wrong. The Mets downsized and should have no problems filling their stadium and the Yankees will not have any issues whatsoever.

  • Ironic that the Twins might actually make the playoffs and the Mets might get left out, no?

The culture and philosophy of this organization needs to change. What that entails, I do not know, but something is in the air at Shea and has stunk for the past 2 years or so.

Maybe a move to CitiField is needed to exorcise whatever crap is damning this team. But when the name of the new stadium rhymes oh so close to how this team has performed the last two years, makes you wonder if this crappy karma is just moving 100 feet beyond the center field bleachers.

      what-have-you-done-for-me-lately?!?

Hey Mets, what the fuck have you done for me since nineteen eighty fucking six?

And you, Mr. Wright, need to get back to what ever it was that you were doing prior to this season because I don't give a shit how many RBI you have. I've watched at least 85% of the games played and have listened to the rest on the radio. And you sir, have been an absolute fucking joke at the plate not only with RISP, but also late in the game with RISP.

Your bullshit production has been a fucking joke all season long, so you may wanna think about not saying stupid shit like, this town is a "what-have-you-done-for-me-lately" kinda place, and just start producing when your team needs it most.

What have you done for me lately... what a douche. SHUT YOUR HOLE AND HIT YOU FUCK!!!

I hate some of the stupid saying "oh its a pennant race, enjoy it! this is fun! since when did we get a self entitlement to the playoffs?"
To those people I say shut the hell up.

I'm not a big booing kind of guy. WHen I'm at the game ad things aren't going well, I just sit back. I'm not even a fan of other people booing BUT this season? Although I havn't boo'd everyone has every right to boo these clowns. They deserve it for doing this two years in a row. This is ridiculous.

I hate the Twins. They suck and yet here they are... again... ready to make the playoffs.

      ReplyDelete
    6. I agree! I don't boo myself, but shit, I could understand it....

    7. david wright could be challenging ryan howard for the rbi lead if he just hit a bit better.

veiled shot by benny. couldve thrown that comment in the appropriate post but whatever.

I've been saying for a while now that this team's main problem is the offense. Delgado's slump hurt us last year and 1st half this year. Losing church and wrights lack of clutch hitting is what's killing them more recently. overall that late inning hitting sucks more than an a hooker on the point.

the booing is retarded. its ok to boo, but sometimes people boo for no damn reason.

the pen is struggling and is killing us but shouldn't catch as much flak as they have. sanchez and heilman are hurt. smith and feliciano are overused. losing wagner also cuts the room for error.

but this goes back to the offense. why are the mets not putting up more runs?

      ReplyDelete
    8. I don't agree with booing typically, but after the end of last season and what appears to be happening now with the same cast of characters is quite disturbing.

Church is killing the Mets. I love him and think he is so much better than people believe he is, but his at-bat last night could have cost the Mets the season. One at bat could have made this look so much better and he put good wood on the ball, but...right at someone.

      ReplyDelete
    9. Was at the game last night in 2nd row behind home plate. Killer seats to watch the debacle unfold. It was surreal going from the Delgado grand slam in which I felt the place go as berzerk as it ever has when I've been there to the slow fade disaster. Unreal. Everyone was absolutely disgusted when the shit went down in the 10th. It wasn't even people being mad or pissed, they were just dismissive disgusted. Horrible.

Was very interesting being up that close and seeing the players and their reactions. David kept on looking up into the stands from the dugout (before his disaster strikeout) pumping people up. It was very cool. But then when he went up to bat, he just looks SO stressed out with all the huge breaths. He totally freaks himself out when he gets in that position. He's acts like a boy still and not a man. And that is the problem. He needs to step up and do it when it counts. He doesn't do that.

Church has turned into a massive liability to this team. He looks absolutely lost at the plate. Not good.

Delgado is so friggin good. Still freaks me out. I hated him with a passion about 3 months ago. The 9 rbi Yankee game which I attended is where I think it all changed with him. He should be the MVP. I think his batting avg being 50 pts higher and leadership give him the edge over Howard. I don't know how you give an MVP to a guy hitting .230 with 400 strikeouts.

Pedro on the mound and then who knows for Sat. Not good. Not good at all. I have a very bad feeling this is fucked and we are all doomed.

    11. This has happened to Church once before. He was going great guns for the Expos, got hurt, and fell on his face on his return. They need to let him sit down and come up for air. Would Endy Chavez be that much worse in the field than Ryan Church at this point?

I'll be there again tonight in my usual Loge seats. I am not remotely superstitous, but I will be wearing the same jersey, hat, socks, pants, and shoes that I wore the other night. Something has to fuckin work at his point, because my cheering does not.

If they win tonight and the Braves pull one out of their ass again, all will be well again. But if they lose, it is gonna be a catastrophe of immense proportions. I'm scared of how bad it might get tonight if the Phillies and Brew go up early and the Mets fall into a hole.

The only Mets I have ever booed at Shea were Mo Vaughn, Cedeno, and Luis Castillo. Oh yeah, and some dickbag named Willie.

Faith tonite, gentlemen. If they lose a share of the wildcard tonight, it may be time to burn the bridges and riot in the streets.

Well, let's hope we spend some money on a bullpen this winter. The Mets should be ten games ahead at this point. 29 blown saves. When you compare to Philadelphia's totals, you see what a difference that makes.

Stayed up and watched the game last night (here in Paris). What a precipitous drop from the elation of Murphy on third to utter, complete failure! I almost thought they would win despite themselves.

Not too optimistic at this point but what can you do?

      Glad you're back, Mike.

    14. Supposedly they are going to have a slew of Met greats parading around Shea on Sunday for the last game. The Wilpons should must fly their lear jet to Japan, kidnap Bobby V and have him here for the ceremonies.

Amazing game. I have no idea how Church beat that throw. From section 4 of the Loge, he looked out by at least 10 feet.

Ramon Martinez? God bless your AAA-Level heart.

If Beltran doesn't get a hit there bottom 9, Wright gets massacred in the papers tomorrow. He's a head case in the late innings.

Holy god. Found enough batteries last night to listen to the game in my shitty, electricity-free upstate apartment. Great win.

These next three scare the shit out of me. These Marlins are probably the last team I want to see march into Shea right now, especially considering the events of a year ago.

It's going to be an accomplishment of epic proportions if this team makes the playoffs. They really have no business being there, given all that's transpired this season (bullpen, Willie, BA RISP, Willie). We shall see ...

Am I the only one with faith in this team today? Look, the Brewers haven't exactly been a playoff-caliber team. Sure, the division is gone. But the bottom line is that we are putting our ace, who leads the league in ERA out there.

And when you need a win, there's no one I'd rather have. Magic has happened before to this team. Just a couple of seasons ago, in fact. So until they're dead, they're still alive. Win today ... Pray for the Cubs. And tomorrow, on the last day of the year, Shea will rock.

And if not, and I'm wrong, I will be the first to call got some major overhaul with this team, because I feel like my $3500 spent in tickets and the $1000 spent on food and parking deserve a little more than two choke jobs over the last two years.

The Mets are just gluttons for punishment. Manuel is a nice guy and perhaps he doesn't deserve to be let go, be he must be in order for there to be a complete overhaul of the culture and personality of this team.

And remember, Jerry was on the front lines of both collapses. Gotta get rid of everyone on the coaching staff who was here those two seasons.

      Mets suck.
Every single person who wears a uniform, everyone single person who is part of that front office should just be ashamed of themselves. They have to look at themselves in the mirror and think about what happened.

People should have either stormed the field or at the very least throw shit onto the field to show the disgust we have in the 162 game performance.

I like Omar. I like Jerry Manuel. Both of them alot. But something has got to give. Someone has to be held accountable. This has been two seasons in a row. In any other job no one would stand for this.

    52. Anonymous10:20 AM

      To be honest, with:

      A new stadium;
      A shitload of revenue (not to mention the millions they raped from fans' pockets this year);
And a team that has collapsed in the worst way these last two seasons ...

It would be inexcusable to not add either Fuentes or K-Rod. Seriously inexcusable. And I don't want to see Marlon Anderson ever again. Same can be said for Heilman, Schoeneweis, Stokes, Ayala, Brandon Knight, etc.

I'd say goodbye to Castillo and eat the contract for whatever you can get (rosin bag, new on deck circle?) ... though I hear on deck circle's are worth more than him at this time.

Omar needs to solidify the rotation beyond Johan, Pelfrey, and Maine. Ollie is someone they'll push for, but I'd be shocked to see them spend big money on anyone ... though I'd love Burnett (Yanks are getting him).

As far as the bullpen is concerned, there clearly needs to be changes. They need a closer, a set-up man, and they need to give Feliciano two tickets back to his homeland to bask in the sun and rest his 294-appearances-made arm.

Fuck I'm so disappointed right now. What a kick in the nuts.

      ReplyDelete
    53. Anonymous10:27 AM

I'm just shocked at how many Mets fans (maybe even some who post here) are insisting that this was not a collapse.

Honestly, what do you call having destiny in your own hands for the majority of the second half of the season, only to let it all slip away with another dismal September?

Just because they had a slimmer lead going down the stretch this season as opposed to last season, does not mean that this was not a collapse.

And it isn't just one players fault. Wright has sucked it all year in big spots, but how quickly we forget just how truly dreadful Delgado was the entire first half of the season. How quickly we forget just how many games he cost them by not delivering in big spots.

      Those games count too.

We all know how awful the pen was, so there's not much more to say there that already hasn't been said. So how bout Reyes not getting it done in September... again! Sure he was a bit more productive this year, but did he even get on base these last 3 games? Loved that 0-5 performance! Way to jump start the team, baby!

And speaking of guys not getting it done the entire first half of the season (going back to Delgado), where the fuck was Beltran most of the year? April through the beginning of August, this motherfucker was virtually invisible at the plate.

We can talk about Castillo, but why waste any more blog space?

Sorry to say folks, but no matter how you want to spin it in order to make yourselves feel better, it still comes out as a massive choke.

Ya don't split a 4-game series with a 100 loss team down the stretch (and struggle just to get those 2 wins) and not call it a choke.

Ya don't blow 5-1 leads against teams that have already wrapped it up and are simply preparing for the playoffs.

Ya don't lose the final series of the season to the same exact team that pissed all over you last season... at the same point in the season!

Ya don't follow up one of the greatest regular season pitching performances of all time with a lack-luster bomb, knowing that:

      A) It may very well end your entire season

      B) It marks the end of an era in your house, which will be followed up by a farewell celebration

      IN THEIR FUCKING HOUSE!!!

THEY ALLOWED THIS TO HAPPEN IN THEIR MOTHERFUCKING HOUSE!!!

It's a collapse you fucking morons! That's what it is. For a second straight season, our beloved cocksuckers bit the big one... BIG TIME!

And to top it all off, the genius... the architect behind this masterpiece of a shit storm, has been granted a 4-year extension.

So lemme get this straight: the manager gets the boot because the players whom the GM brought in failed to get the job done. Yet the GM not only gets to stick around, but he is presented with a 4-year extension as a gift for a job well done.

Huh. And while I really do like what Jerry has done since coming in as manager, he needs to go as well. He's been past of all of this. Whether or not anyone thinks he deserves the boot (and really he doesn't), it's about changing the entire culture of this loser franchise. In order to do this, many of the people involved and responsible for this mess over the last 3 seasons has to go.

That includes manager, coaches (except guys who were brought up from the minors mid-season), GM, assistant GM, scouts, and yes... players. And not just bums. Maybe it's time to take a long, hard look at 1 or two of the so-called "core" players. I don't wanna sound like Francesa. I don't think everyone has to go, but maybe it's not nuts to think that the Mets should at the very least, examine trade possibilities for guys like Wright, Beltran, and or Reyes.

I just think that something really drastic needs to be done here in order to shake up this flat, complacent team that has now failed in 3 consecutive seasons.

Sadly though, it's starting to look like the same old, same ole. Starting with bringing back the GM who built this mess, and the manager who has been part of this mess for the last 3 seasons.

      Not good.
