A-Lightning-Rod

Alex Rodriguez is a guy who has two amazing abilities. He pounces on fastballs in a snake like fashion. He also does incredibly stupid things.

Everyone knows by now that he has been implicated as testing positive in MLB’s 2003 steroid sampling.

I can understand why the guy would do it. He is hungry. He wants to put up the best numbers ever and become a baseball immortal. To do that you need a physical advantage and the steroids do that.

In the end his image is tarnished and who knows if he’s going to the HOF. I do know that he will become a baseball immortal. It’ll probably along the lines of Pete Rose rather than Hank Aaron.

This is the Yankees problem and I don’t feel bad about the Mets not making a push for him in 2000. This guy is an rbi machine but the trouble is too much. I would’ve hated dealing with stripper-gate, Madonna-gate, and now this fiasco. He’s like TO but with a better attitude.

Jason Stark had this interest bit about Fernando Martinez in a recent article.

“He looks to me like he can be a young Bobby Abreu… His discipline at the plate is good. He worked counts. He hung in against left-handers. He did a lot of good things. He may be 20 years old, but he doesn’t look like it, the way he handles himself. He really plays under control.”

This is always good to hear. Seeing the Rays bring up Evan Longoria and Cole Hamels becoming a superstar so fast give me hope that we may have another Reyes or Wright. I just hope this guy can stay healthy (he left DR because of a swollen elbow).

Actually, the top two prospects in the organization are potential addition to Reyes & Wright. Fernando will probably make it to Shea this year, but Wilmer Flores is at least three/four years away. Also high on Reese Havens as our eventual second baseman.

A-Fraud went from being the next big hope for baseball to another vacuous, dispassionate professional a long time ago. He's old news. A natural yes (which is why the roid news will hurt him in the long term) but not much more than a talented guy in a baseball uniform.

At least A-Rod came out and admitted his guilt like a man (cough, Clemens, Bonds, cough). Of course, this is after a nationwide denial on 60 Minutes.

Fernando Martinez has all the potential in the world if he can stay healthy. He has such a smooth swing ... hope he's at Citi for years to come.

Re: the Castillo optimism someone posted yesterday ... until he shows me he is capable of ANYTHING, I have none.

A-Fraud's admission sounded better in the shorter version that ESPN distributed early yesterday than in the full video. The whole I don't know what I took schtick is nothing more than malarkey. Claiming you could test positive for the steroid he took because of a supplement is even worse. Just plain disingenuous!

Agree TC regarding Castillo. At best he's a singles hitter, but the speed is gone & so is the glove work.

I'm over A-Rod. I haven't even bothered to mock my Yankee-fan friends about this. Who cares? I mean, I get why it's a big deal, but the bottom line is that a bunch of these jerks - probably including some of our favorites - juiced up and produced huge numbers. Stop it from happening again, if possible, and let's move on. A-Rod? Please ...

I've got to say, I really don't feel very solid about this Mets team headed into camp. Hopefully they prove me wrong, but it just feels like there's still an awful lot of holes. I do have some slight - and completely unjustified - optimism re: Castillio, but it's just as likely to be offset by disapointment in Delgado. We shall see ...

And count me in again for the Fantasy League Benny.

i liked A-Rod growing up. i remember when he came up his first year and lost eligibility for ROY consideration for his next year despite his insane #'s. i lost love for him when

chris: i join you. like i've said that the team has holes galore. it has potential to suprise, but it has potential to just be a dud.

These test results were never to have seen the light of day and the union was supposed to have destroyed the results. So it made no sense for A-Rod to volunteer the information that he was on Roids when there was no proof that could be made available that he used them. If you’re going to criticize A-Rod for denying he used Roids before the proof that he usde them became known then you had better be the type that stops at the local precinct everyday and hands the police a list of the number of times and locations and by how much you exceeded the speed limit that day. The difference between A-Rod and what I believe to be a host of other players is that they got away with it and A-Rod did not.

It looks as if Abreu will be signing with the Angels. I thought Abreu on a one year contract with an option would be perfect for the left field slot. He is a left handed hitter that can hit left handed pitchers (see his splits) and I am not sold on the Murphy/Tatis platoon. Like most of you I like Murphy and hope he does well. But you never know how a player will perform after an excellent inaugural season. I can’t help but think of Bob Hazel whose rookie year with the 1957 Milwaukie Braves was awesome. Here are the stats that helped his Braves win a pennant:
    41G, 134AB, .403BA, .477OBP, .649SLG and 209OPS+.
Try and guess what his follow-up season was.
    63G, 114AB, .211BA, .302OBP, .281SLG and 60OPS+.
After his follow-up season he never played in the majors again. It seems the pitchers adjusted to him and he couldn’t make the necessary corrections. The pitchers will adjust to Murphy and Tatis and we will have to see if they can make the necessary corrections. I think Murphy will be fine but there have been a lot of guys that have had trouble in their sophomore season.

  7. Bob Hazel? Wow.

Add Ted Cox in 1977 to your list. I'm to lazy to look up the stats, but I remember him hitting something like .362, and then getting traded to the tribe for Eckersley, never to be a significant major leaguer.

Will Mike be back for baseball season?

We would certainly like Mr. Oliver to come back!

If the Nats really don't have a spot for Josh Willingham (see WashPost today), we should try to trade for him. Like Murphy/Willingham better than Murph/Tatis. Plus Tatis as bat on the bench (probably replacing Marlin A. makes more sense). Reed-Cora-Tatis-Willingham/Murphy-ugliest catcher/human alive makes a better bench!

    No I don't!

Willingham would be great on this team, and Tatis on the bench improves it by leaps and bounds.

Os - if it were not for you, this blog would have gone down in a large heap of shit like the Mets have the last two years. So, thank you for keeping it alive.

Mets signed Livan to a minor league deal. The 6.05 ERA last season is not good. More depth as insurance, however, always is. Doubt we see much of him.

I think Garcia is going to wrap up the 5-spot with Redding as the Darren Oliver. I like that.

Santana, Perez, Pelfrey, Maine, Garcia is very solid the more and more I think of it.

Jerry said he may consider batting Castillo lead-off to get him going. Perhaps he should just buy him a plane ticket. It'd be a lot easier on the eyes.

Castillo first would be a waste of Reyes. Cannot wait to see José have to hold up at second on one of his trademark hits up the right field line because the gimpy second baseman cannot get around from first to home. The Mets should buy out Castillo and sign Orlando Hudson!

    That should do it!

I first tried this product when visiting in Portland and mistakenly assumed this product left my hair so nice-to-the-touch because the Oregon water was so soft. Not so. Using it in my own hometown, I

have had the same results -- soft, natural curls. Too many styling products on the market leave hair stiff and crinkly. Moroccan Oil Intense Curl Cream is well worth the cost. Be advised that only a

dime-size amount is necessary to great results

    My

hairdresser bought one of these flat irons from his distributor knowing that my hair would provide the usual great testing platform. It worked so well I bought one immediately. The iron glides through hair

very easily and is lightweight and easy to handle. Better than ceramic irons and definitely better than the ones you can buy in beauty stores.
