"No one really gave me credit for doing what I did. They just criticized me," "The manager countered that Wright might not have had as good a year had the manager not protected the youngster by placing him down in the order early in the season."
Riiiiiiiiight. That does not even deserve a response.
"I guess I'm a show-me guy, I want to see that David can keep making the adjustments," Randolph said.
I'm a show me guy too. Show me why you should still employed. Hint #1, treat your best hitter like your best hitter. Don't punish someone for being young.
"I let them play," Randolph said. "It's not always going to come down to average and statistics. It's just how you play the game. Managers look at players and it's what they see."
Your gut decisions have worked out oh so well so far, so why change?
"He was just one of the guys we had," Randolph said. "Who knows? We may even pick someone up. The competition just started. It doesn't change the whole picture at second base for me at all. The fact that he's not here, we have to just move on."
That was when Brett Boone retired and that was followed up by...
"Keppinger really wasn't in the mix. Keppinger was kind of a long shot, and he's still kind of a long shot, but he's there."
Willie, wait. I thought you just said the competition just started? Now Keppinger had no shot and since A Hern has been playing short (a very foreign position from second) he is out too?
"I'm not concerned at all"
That was Willie commenting on Victor Zambrano's inability to actually resemble a good pitcher. I know Willie is not going to throw his guy under the bus, so I give him a free pass, but I wouldn't mind a comment about him needing to step up and perform in the next week or so.
"He's still a nice player, but let's not get crazy," Randolph said. ~ 4/15/08
Willie telling Angel Pagan to not get too excited because chances are, he really is not good.
"He's not going to be in that tree all year," Randolph said of Pagan, who is also tied with David Wright for the team lead with 10 RBIs. "We've seen a lot of players come through the pike and do what Pagan's doing, so let's keep this in perspective." ~ 4/15/08
Willie 'motivating' his team in their time of need.
"I like Luis in the No. 2 spot," Randolph said. "He's still one of the better No. 2 hitters in the game." ~ 4/15/08
I rest my case.

Interesting - I've been curious to see what he's got. I don't think Nady will lose his job in any event, he's played well on the whole this year.
2:05 PM
are we sure he's starting?
so what does that give us?
reyes
lo duca
beltran
delgado
wright
floyd
valentin
milledge
that should work well if he keeps drawing all those walks we won't be leading off with the pitcher. but it's a good thing floyd is hitting otherwise the bottom of the order would be kinda soft (unless the kid steps up).
i wonder if he will eventually be in the 2 hole -- i guess that would be next year since he'll probably be sent back down after Nady's apendix hole heals.
btw, i've had my appendix out and it did take me about a month to get full speed. but the same day i had mine out schilling had his out and he came back much faster so maybe nady could play in 10-20 days if he heals well and wants to push it.

mr. diaz can officially say hello to obsolescence.
2:08 PM
Toasty, I'm with you. Nady will get his spot when he comes back no doubt. I don't think that is really even a question, unless they decide to use him as a package for another starter if Lastings looks great. Worst scenario that Milledge gets more work at AAA...is that so bad?
Jake...Willie will keep Milledge at eight for sure. I'd like to see him at last at seven since it is tough to hit 8th and get slop thrown at you all day. Diaz did a great job doing that last season, but I'm all for him getting at least the seventh slot.
Milledge will do fine. Serioiusly, two weeks of .300 with a few doubles would not suprise me. I wouldn't expect him to walk with him being anxious and all.
Two hole? He's better in the leadoff than Reyes, but that's for another day. But we know that the Mets will not move Reyes from leadoff.
Good stuff Jake...so we might have Milledge for a month. That's why they were quick this time.
Diaz is d-o-n-e done. It's not helping that he is not hitting either.
2:40 PM
i guess he would theoretically be better leading off than reyes. but in reality where else is reyes going to hit? the bottom of the order is the only place and that is a waste. as frustrating as reyes can be he is the best basestealer/run maker in the league according to my orange and blue goggles. so he does have value at the top. plus i am getting tired of people saying he needs to learn how to take a walk. he may have a ways to go, but he is learning. his obp is 65 points higher than his avg so really the problem is he needs to get more hits. the guy was clearly rushed and is still learning but he is learning and not a lost cause and meanwhile when he does good the mets win.
we're going to have the same problem with milledge learning on the job i guess. but according to hojo and tijerina lastings is more teachable and mental in his approach than the toolsy reyes so maybe he'll be able to learn how to hit 2nd by next year. if so, and if reyes keeps improving, that would be swell.
3:08 PM
clarification: "toolsy" and its negative connotation might not have been exactly what hojo said about reyes (who he didn't coach that much) but it is what i understood him to be implying. he certainly did say repeatedly that lastings has a good approach and learns fast.
3:12 PM
I agree jake...but I like him at #2 more than #1 for a few reason.
A) It opens up the right side for him to slap singles through all day with some on base.
B) He hits significantly better with people one. Yes, you only lead off once per game, but the top of the order follows up the bottom of the order. He hits with men on base less than others.
Toolsy is negative..that means talented but unrefined for prospects or else you will get 'refined' approach to hitting and stuff like F-Mart.
3:26 PM
Diaz needs a change of address. Same as Nady did before this year. He has some value, so au revoir, baby!
3:48 PM
Diaz has not value. I agree with you, but giving him away does not do anyone any good.
4:15 PM
Is it sad that I think its completely feasible for Willie to have really said this... (from mets.com)
Randolph wasn't going to assign a specific role to Bell, but the manager said that having two southpaws -- Bell and Darren Oliver -- who can give the Mets innings is a big plus.
4:18 PM
right, so what i meant is hojo wasn't trying to be negative about reyes, just saying he thought lastings was more in the dw category.
4:20 PM
trading nady is not a bad idea if lastings does well. his value must be high.
4:22 PM
Did someone just compare Melky Cabrera to Lastings Milledge on WFAN? Jesus H.
4:45 PM
Kyle...I believe it too. Willie said he was going to see if Bell can fit into the long-man category with Oliver so we know it's a typo, but as I already stated below in the previous post, Willie does not like 'information'.
Oh, yeah. I did get that Jake, but Reyes is toolsy in the same vain was Gomez. Check their stats, they really are not far off. Reyes did nothing to earn his promotion really than having tools. He wasn't tearing up any league.
Yeah, Nady is worth something. Cheap. Young. Productive. Could be something if the Mets want to use him in a package...Beane did want right handed pop, no?
4:48 PM
No doubt a Yankee fan make such silly claims.
4:49 PM
Unless you are totally afraid he is being rushed, this move makes sense. I don't think any of us wanted to see Michael Tucker or Jose Offerman with the Big League club right now. With 'Stings and Soler, I'm pretty excited for tonight's game.
5:15 PM
I have been waiting for Lastings Milledge to come up with the Mets since the day he got drafted. This dude is the "truth".
It's a takeover. Heilman, Reyes, Wright, Milledge, and then Pelfrey. This shit is nuts.
Milledge has Killa Kam's old number, 44.
I went to my first game of the year last night.
Those "Olay, Olay, Olay, Olay" chants kick ass. It's such a beautiful thing with Reyes. It becomes a "Jose, Jose, Jose, Jose, JOOOOOSAY!" chant.
And when Reyes tied it the stadium was just... ELECTRIC, it was BUMPIN' in there. I'm almost getting wet thinking about how that chant would sound with a PACKED HOUSE in a playoff atmosphere.
Holy shit, its nuts. It could soccer status.
And finally. In the Upper reserve section where I was sitting. There was an actual VILLIAN there. THere was this mid life crisis, puerto rican, Jim Leyritz lookin' dude with a Yankee hat. Rooting against the Yankees.
This dude got SHITTED on. He made the night sooooo much funner.
the usual "asshole", "Lets go Red Sox", and "Yankees SUCKS" chant were obviously applicable for that.
There were also "Get him DIAPERS", "We're in 1st place", even a "Na Na Na Na, HEY-ey! Goodbye" chants directed at him.
Just a great way to spend my first game of the year.
7:14 PM
Fuck Fremming. Dude is blind.
Soler likes to earn his paycheck in the first inning. Hopefully he smooths it out or else it could be a long night.
Benny, great game to go see last night. Another one of the Mets 20 or so instant classics they've had this year already.
7:25 PM
I wanna correct myself
*Rooting against the Mets.
7:31 PM
Yeah, I kind of figured that. I just cannot figure out for the life of me why those people are allowed to breath.
7:33 PM
damn that sounds tight benny. are the soccer cheers just for jose or what is the deal?
7:40 PM
Only for Jose.
Because "Olay Olay Olay" sounds alot like "Jose Jose Jose". Shit is hot.
7:45 PM
Everytime I start to hate Valentin again, he does something.
7:54 PM
He got out, but hitting it hard gets rid of the butterflies. It was not a hit, but the job was done. He'll get a hit today.

7:56 PM
that's tight. btw, i'm stoked for the world cup too.
yeah that was a rope.
8:03 PM
actually, they could do the cheer for Alay, Alay, Alalalee, if he sticks around.
8:04 PM
ok maybe not
