The Ken Oberkfell (or anyone else for that matter) For Manager Movement
"No one really gave me credit for doing what I did. They just criticized me," "The manager countered that Wright might not have had as good a year had the manager not protected the youngster by placing him down in the order early in the season."
Riiiiiiiiight. That does not even deserve a response.
"I guess I'm a show-me guy, I want to see that David can keep making the adjustments," Randolph said.
I'm a show me guy too. Show me why you should still employed. Hint #1, treat your best hitter like your best hitter. Don't punish someone for being young.
"I let them play," Randolph said. "It's not always going to come down to average and statistics. It's just how you play the game. Managers look at players and it's what they see."
Your gut decisions have worked out oh so well so far, so why change?
"He was just one of the guys we had," Randolph said. "Who knows? We may even pick someone up. The competition just started. It doesn't change the whole picture at second base for me at all. The fact that he's not here, we have to just move on."
That was when Brett Boone retired and that was followed up by...
"Keppinger really wasn't in the mix. Keppinger was kind of a long shot, and he's still kind of a long shot, but he's there."
Willie, wait. I thought you just said the competition just started? Now Keppinger had no shot and since A Hern has been playing short (a very foreign position from second) he is out too?
"I'm not concerned at all"
That was Willie commenting on Victor Zambrano's inability to actually resemble a good pitcher. I know Willie is not going to throw his guy under the bus, so I give him a free pass, but I wouldn't mind a comment about him needing to step up and perform in the next week or so.
"He's still a nice player, but let's not get crazy," Randolph said. ~ 4/15/08
Willie telling Angel Pagan to not get too excited because chances are, he really is not good.
"He's not going to be in that tree all year," Randolph said of Pagan, who is also tied with David Wright for the team lead with 10 RBIs. "We've seen a lot of players come through the pike and do what Pagan's doing, so let's keep this in perspective." ~ 4/15/08
Willie 'motivating' his team in their time of need.
"I like Luis in the No. 2 spot," Randolph said. "He's still one of the better No. 2 hitters in the game." ~ 4/15/08
I rest my case.

awwwww yeaaaaaaaa.
1 down, 161 to go.
Good stuff by Willie yesterday as well, strong game for him too. Maybe he's learning! just maybe
Go mets!
2:05 PM
willie is still a piece of shit manager. shit doesnt do anything but smell less and the time passes.
santana was good yesterday. he's gonna be great. schneider looks good. lastings who?
2:19 PM
Willie learn? Never!
The Lasting trade makes sense in 2008 and 2009....2010 is still out there.
2:54 PM
Can't give props to Willie for actually managing a game like it mattered. Props to Omar for removing Willie's favorite people (i.e. Mota) from the equation, forcing Willie to "manage" well.
Good win yesterday. Johan was the answer to what we've always asked for since the days of Gooden (before he was free-basing coke off of the dugout bench).
4:17 PM
the only downside is that Mr. 0.1 dint get tagged with the loss for atlanta.
sorry to disagree, but the LM trade will never ever never make sense. Unless he gets hit by a meteor that somehow spares the Wiffmaster/platoon parts the Mets received for him. Then the trade looks pretty good.
4:17 PM
tc has it right. Willie will look smart because this team is good. Santana went 7 and the Mets scored 6. Brilliant!
The trade was not horrible. I leave it at that. He did get useful parts back.
How about the away game in HD? Sweet!
4:38 PM
I wonder, if Lasto did get hit by a meteor, whether Billy Wagner would claim it was showing off and not knowing his place? Somehow, the snippet "disrespecting the meteor" works it's way into my mind. In any case I agree IMFM on your take on the trade.
But that said, Schneider looked good behind the plate yesterday (as Santana & Heilman did as well, though I stick by what I wrote about Santana last night), the kind of throw back defense first catcher that the Mets have needed forever.
Sidd, if Johan wins twenty, then the Mets will have two twenty game winners this year. I think this is Johnny Maine's year and everyone else just gets to play in it!
4:42 PM
135.00 ERA is hysterical unless he is on your fantasy roster. Ugh.
4:55 PM
Guys, Willie left Show in to face many right handers, many many MANY times.
I dunno, I'm all for killing Willie every time he makes a dumb move. but in my book, to be fair, you have to give credit when he makes good moves.
I think its a little unfair to just say oh this team is better and thats why Willie didnt screw it up.
he easily could've left Show in to face that lefty. EASILY! we know this! lol
5:12 PM
....that RIGHTY that is ;)
5:13 PM
I think this is Johnny Maine's year and everyone else just gets to play in it!
Ha!
John, I would have told you to not draft him. What were you thinking? He's a chump!
dep. yes, he makes some good moves. Of course he does, but he is simply not a good manager overall. He'll make a right call now and then, but he does many, many, many dumb things.
5:21 PM
dg, Maine winning 20 would be SWEET! I can see him doing it, now that he's gotten a year under his belt. The biggest opportunity for improvement would be in the second half of the season for Johnny Maine.
5:32 PM
yes yes
just to be clear, I still think Willie sucks big hairy moose balls as a manager.
5:35 PM
Well, we won't go undefeated.
10:46 PM
What the fuck happened to Reyes? Is he broken forever? Everything seemed to click in 2006, and continued to build on that through June of last season.
Then it all falls apart.
He still looks like shit at the plate, and I'm sure being called out on his first stolen base attempt yesterday has frustrated him greatly seeing as how it was a total bullshit call.
All I know is I'm tired of watching him hit pop fly after pop fly. Sure he drives in a run with a sac tonight, but that was a rally killer! His job there is to smack a base hit for a double, drive in two, and continue the rally.
Awful at-bat followed by another awful at-bat and what's worse is it does not appear as if he's making any adjustments from last season's freefall.
I'm losing faith in him.
10:50 PM
I'm not sure how the Mets failed to get to Gregg. He couldn't even see the catcher. I knew then they weren't going to win this one.
Great job ny the umps tonight, again.

Pedro's hammy popped. No bueno.
Somewhere, Claudio Vargas is smiling because his phone is going to ring.
11:05 PM
The potential loss of Pedro for possibly 2 months is huge. The major strength of this ballclub is the brilliance of its 4 starters. The Mets don’t have much in the way of depth so whoever replaces Pedro is the equivalent of a number 5 starter. It’s only the 2nd game of the season so the loss shouldn’t bother anyone, but the potential loss of Pedro hurts bad.
The Marlin’s pitcher goes 3-0 on three hitters, two of them walk and then Church comes up and swings at the 1st pitch a slider in the dirt. Just what is Church’s thought process up there?
11:24 PM
The only negative comment I have is perhaps a minor one about Church.
The Marlin’s pitcher goes 3-0 on three hitters, two of them walk and then Church comes up and swings at the 1st pitch a slider in the dirt. Just what is Church’s thought process up there?
11:42 PM
I apologize for the double posting but I’m old and I just pulled a hammy.
11:43 PM
and for the night, what was it, 14 times the marlin pitchers went 3-0?
