Me: Delgado blows.

I have been feeling very weird about this team lately. I have been incredibly busy these days and no matter how busy I have been in the past, I typically made time to write a little something about the Mets. Now? Blah. There is shockingly just nothing compelling about this team and they have become completely boring. Almost 40 games into the season, the Mets are one game over .500 and playing the sub .500 Yankees this weekend.

There is a little less juice for me these days in regards to this series because instead of having two teams at the top of the pack, you have two teams just trying to hold on. The Yankees at least have an excuse being they have serious pitching problems, but the Mets have been largely healthy and their off-season vision of how this team would be comprised has been largely intact.

The team they wanted to run out there has been run out for the most part and a team that is universally believed to have talent. They had pitching, they had hitting, they had defense, and they had some good relievers. Where is the disconnect? What is the problem? If Omar and the Wilpons want to take a Randolph-like approach to this team for the rest of the season, great. However, they will miss the playoffs again.

Something needs to give here and the team is not looking like a cohesive group. Maybe I am completely wrong, but Wagner does not seem to care what Willie thinks and Wagner is amped up enough and thinks enough is going on that he feels the need to speak out. I have been optimistic all season, but at this point, I think it is hard to be. Yes, the Mets are 2.5 games out of first, but it is a painful 2.5 games.

"Somebody tell me why the -- the closer is getting interviewed and I didn't even play," Wagner said, "and they're over there not being interviewed."

Let the record state he pointed in the direction of the row of lockers where Carlos Delgado and Carlos Beltran dress.

There was no one there.

"Oh, I got it," Wagner said. "They're gone. -- shocker."

(Beltran already had spoken. Delgado never did.)

A little less than a year ago, Paul Lo Duca angered the Mets' front office by uttering a similar sentiment. "Nobody else wants to talk," he said. "Some of these guys have to start talking. They speak English, believe me."

And there you have it. Willie is the captain on this ship and it seems to have firmly run aground. If I had my way, he would have been axed after missing the World Series by one game, but the Mets lied to themselves despite glaring holes in his baseball reasoning. Fast forward to 2008 and not much has changed except the clubhouse has seemingly moved backwards. Something about this team just feels all wrong right now and this season is quickly turning into a disaster.

  • Ha!

  • David Sloan? Bat shit crazy.

"That a joke too? You're a funny guy."

And then, at 12:46 pm, in apparent celebration of Mother's Day, David Sloane, the agent for Carlos Delgado, wrote back the following e-mail, which I present to you in its entirety:

    "So's your Mom."

Nice. I am officially sick of Delgado and his agent.

  • Klap thinks the Mets are out of control.

At some point, winning players have to become emotionally invested in the wins and losses. That's a formal way of putting it. Here's a simpler expression of the truth: the Mets need an edge. Wagner says, "There needs to be other guys that are accountable" and not leave the explaining to the same teammates every day. That creates "tension" in the clubhouse, because it creates the impression that certain cliques don't care about winning or losing.

    Preach on brother.

  • Adding insult to incompetence. Losing that game hurts.

  • Tim Marchman gives the Mets a slight edge for the Subway Series.

The leadership on this club is non existint, it seems that if they just show up throw there gloves on the field things will work out. There seems to be a hunger missing and the front office will have to make a significant statement if things don't change, maybe a Yankee sweep( perish the thought) will open some eyes.

    Eyes should be opened regardless.

I mean, this false sense of things be OK was felt before. Let us not be fooled sweep or no sweep. This team needs a change and the easiest part is not gutting the team. It is changing the manager.

Win or lose this weekend, it needs to happen.

What a year to get the Extra Innings package. I feel like I need a break from watching these guys. I just want to close my eyes to the season for a month and check back to see if they came alive or not. At 48 and a lifelong fan, I've seen a lot of bad Mets teams. This listless, lifeless, unmotivated, underachieving team is killing me the most. At this point it seems like an obvious move to fire the manager, regardless of who he is. That's just how baseball works. Something needs to radically change and that's the easiest, quickest radical change to make. Willie hater or not, he has to go.

I wholeheartedly agree with you. There was so much excitement and passion brought on by this team from '05 into '06 and the first half of '07, and I certainly wouldn't call myself a fair weather fan, but this .500 baseball is just sucking the life out of my love for this squad. I used to come home turn the games on and know I would go to bed happy with a victory most of the time. Now, if I even try to make it home on time, I'll put the game and just watch in anticipation of a pitcher blowing up, or baserunners being left on base.

I don't know what the reason is and I have a feeling that firing randolph probably wouldn't solve the root problem. This just looks like a .500 team.

With all that said, you gotta post more, you're like my good counterbalance to Cerrone.

I want Valentine back! I know that Valentine is happy in Japan and not interested in returning. I have tickets to see Valentine in Japan in July. If I see him, I'm going to plead for him to change his mind. That way, any under-performing player can be punished by being marched out to the microphones and having to declare their sexuality on record.

So, Mike, when you achieve your campaign goal & Willie gets sacked, who's your preferred replacement?

I'm trying. Shit has been crazy, but I will try and make up with a few weekend posts and a daily posting schedule during the week starting on Monday. Promises...promises...I know.

    Please please with Valentine.

Chris...The only likely guys are Oberkfell and Carter.

I like both. Oberkfell seems like and old school guy who can give a shit about the media or what anyone thinks. He seems like a good candidate to me, but Carter would work.

The problem is, who is really out there? No big names. The Mets have to suck it up and not go for a big name guy which was their mistake in the first place. I was against this from the beginning. I have been wrong plenty of times, but not in this instance.

Nope, none that I know of. I'm with you on Obie. Carter, I think, has burned his bridge, hasn't he?

I'd love - LOVE - to see some of that 86 attitude infused into this team (if it's even possible with this group), but I don't know who's available to do it.

There's no way in hell the Wilpons will even look twice at Backman. In a perfect world, Mex would be primed to take the spot ... but it sure as hell isn't a perfect world.

I think it's got to be Obie, maybe with Carter replacing Sandy Sr. or Manuel if need be. I don't think you can leapfrog Obie again, especially not midseason, and especially not with Carter.

I have been wrong plenty of times, but not in this instance.

Ain't it the truth - on both counts!

You know, I've been pretty mum on this whole Willie thing for about a year. For some dumbass reason, I just believed in him - a little bit blindly, I admit. But I'm on the bandwagon now.

Mex has bigger fish to fry and is having a blast doing what he is doing. Why bother stepping into this situation.

It is not all that much of a good one. High expectations and a bad clubhouse. Wow. Not an envious position.

No more blindly following Willie. Why did he do to earn that respect? 3b coach to manager on the biggest stage in the world? Ugh. Why was that ever a good idea?

    2:24 PM

Why was that ever a good idea?

Never was, and it took me - and a lot of other people - way too long to figure that out, apparently.

I've seen the light finally. Here's hoping some others have too.

And yeah, no way in hell Mex would even consider taking the job. I guess what I'm saying is he's precisely the kind of smart, bold, no bullshit, heart-on-the-sleeve leader this team needs right now.

If that's Obie, all the better. Change need to happen, and soon. I don't even give a shit if Willie stays, as long as he and his club do a 180 starting tonight. Pretty sure that ain't gonna happen, so let's get some new blood in here, motherfucking pronto.

Not possible with this team. Attitude like the '86 club is bred into you, it is not something you can just flip a switch and happens. Yes Willie needs to go...as in RIGHT NOW! But let's also not fool ourselves in the process. The inherent issue is also larger than that of just firing a manager. The mix of this team is also just plain sucky. And that points to a higher source.

I said it once (well actually about three times in the past) and I will say it again. After Willie goes, Omar should be next on the hot seat. Why do you think Willie still has a job? He is a buffer to Omar.

(Can we ad Castillo to that mix?)

Omar does not and should not get a free pass as of yet. Willie is a very bad captain on a failing ship. The ship builders should be held accountable as well if they cannot right the situation.

I'm with you on that one, Mike, as I have on all subject regarding Willie for a long time.

Mex would have to start smoking again to manage the Mets. He's happy in his skybox with his lollipops.

I like the idea of Oberkfell, a really solid experienced choice. Sounds about right. Plus if he can deal with all those AAAA personalities in Norleans, he should be able to get the ego thing here in NY.

Carter strikes me as a watered down version of Bobby V. Bobby V., of course, would be perfect for this team, but I just don't see his motivation beyond dollars. How many baseball guys get to live in another country, learn another culture, and still get paid real money? He's a very, very lucky guy!

Watered down version? I am assuming you are talking personality-wise, because I must have missed the memo that Carter was a great tactical manager.

Carter comes off to me as someone whom would have a huge ego. Probably bigger than BV. I dunno...if they are going to hire one of the former 86 Mets, they need the ones that had the fire, not the face. This team needs a swift kick in the taint with steel toed boots.

Dykstra is too rich to deal with this mess. Unless he has something to prove to himself, but can he manage? Didn't we go down this road with Willie?

3 or more years of managing at AA or higher please. Unless you are Carter...three years total works just fine for me and especially so since he was a catcher.

Almar...Carter knows his Xs and Os. I love catchers as managers because they are probably more knowledgeable than many, many people on the field about how everything goes.

They know about pitchers and they know how to position players...they are always in the game. I don't know...maybe I'm wrong, but that is how I see it.

Put me down for Obie Wan. But, on the other hand, there's no way Camera Carter would have "put up" with another Countrytime Under the Bus tour. No siree, the Kid would have leapt in front of that camera, or any other recording device that tried to take attention away from him. CarlosX2 would have a much easier time sneaking out of the club house to go count their money.

WagTounge has a point: someone needs to invest in this team's sucess, why not the players?

As long as the major news media keeps ripping Willie, the Wilpons are going to be edging closer and closer to the phone.

He's lost the clubhouse, and he's lost pretty much everyone's respect. He's as good as done unless they go +.500 over the next 3 or 4 series. And by +.500, I mean more like .650

I'd love to rant some more on the great bundle of suck that is the New York Mets right now, but I'm graduating college tomorrow, and I can't bother.

Valentine's not leaving Japan. I was just over there visiting a friend and had a chance to head out to Chiba. BV's got it good being the first foreign manager to win a championship. He's really been accepted in that society where most players and foreigners, BV himself at first, are labelled 'Helpers'.

That said, I would welcome BV if he did decided for some reason to give it all up and return to this muck.

I relished in those two wins. I especially love how Willie tried his hardest to appear angry when the homerun call was reversed.

He had this gem to say in his post-game: "That's what bench coaches do," Randolph told reporters. "The ump told me to shut up and he was looking to bait someone. I wasn't going to argue with him, but Jerry took the bait. Thanks, Jerry."

    Thanks, Jerry!! Fuck you Willie!!

Someone please never stop Billy Wagner's unhittablity (new word created especially for him). It makes me forget the days of John Franco, Benitez, Looper, etc., and I love it.

Finally, this is awesome: "Considering Johan Santana's career ERA thru May is 4.01, I can live w/ current 3.10 mark." In case you were wondering, the Mets are 7-2 in Johan starts. And one of those they lost 3-1. Earning those $$.
