Progress, But No Results

I prefer results oriented activities, but some people are looking at the silver lining in this 3-7 skid the Mets are mired in.

"We have to dig down deeper, and I think we have," Randolph said. "It might not show in our record, but we are starting to play better. We have to start making our own breaks." As for his situation, he said it is not weighing on the players, noting some may like him and some may not. Everyone is always so concerned about the fragile psyches of ballplayers. Here's a tip - just go out and play.

I typically would not expect him to say anything else because he cannot be outright negative, but I think everyone is past the point of sugar coating things. There is one thing about Willie that has made him a bit more endearing these days and it was his stand up comedy performance during the post game on Friday. Frankly, I like that side of him a bit more and maybe he should let that permeate his entire being and maybe he should be showing a bit more personality. Of course, that makes him more fun of a manager, but that still does not cover up his shortcomings as a tactical manager.

That being said, I think things have gone a bit out of control. The entire Pelfrey thing was ridiculous, the Pedro chants were silly, etc. Everyone is now getting on him for non-issues. I have seen Willie do plenty of egregious things and they helped build my disdain for him as a manager, but he simply cannot win these days. It has gotten to the point that actual sound baseball decisions are being scrutinized and this my friends, is not good.

I have not wanted him since his facial hair edict but I have discovered that I actually do have a heart and actually feel bad for him. There should be a different manager leading this ballclub, but I just hope everyone can keep perspective whilst this ridiculousness is going on.

* * *

  • A little Michael Iona chatter.

I would actually love to see the A's make that type of splash. It is always nice to see smaller market teams jump into the fray on these types of players and if the Mets do not get him, Oak-town would be a great landing spot.

  • By way of tc, a 3-d look at the new home of the Mets.

  • It is always good when Johan Keri weighs in on anything and especially so when it is on the Mets.

All those teams did a better job of scouting and player acquisition than the Mets did. They also did so with smaller payrolls, in some cases much smaller.

They say necessity is the mother of invention. Maybe necessity is what the Mets have been missing.

Part of their '06 success is exactly what Jonah is talking about. These kind of lightening in a bottle scenarios happen every year and typically propel a certain team to, and possibly through, the playoffs.

There were a few people who look really smart stating that the Mets were due to regress in 2007 as a result of the likes of Valentin, Oliver, Chavez, etc. playing over their heads and the unlikelihood that Omar would be able to replace their unrealistic output.

  • Willie gate is getting ugly.

  • The rumor mill is churning.

Sources have told the Daily News that principal owner Fred Wilpon and chief operating officer Jeff Wilpon have authorized Minaya to fire Randolph, pitching coach Rick Peterson and first base coach Tom Nieto. Bench coach Jerry Manuel would ascend to manager if Randolph is ousted, while Triple-A New Orleans manager Ken Oberkfell and pitching coach Dan Warthen would join the major league staff.

The ever-looming presence of Kenny.... Everyone is on notice these days.

  • Church is feeling better these days.

“I’m improving every day, getting better,” he said. “I haven’t had any dizzy spells. Now it’s just about waiting out the time on the DL. Everything is completely gone.”

  • Cocaine helped the Mets land Keith Hernandez.

  • Wally has some pointed things to say about the Mets.

These $140-million Mets are looking more and more like a one-run horse, and that run is now almost two years in the past. Someone has to take the fall and as always, the ready-made scapegoat is the manager.

Randolph's big mistake, it turns out, was his failure to understand the modern ballplayer, many of whom make more for one season than he made for an entire career but still need to be "motivated" by someone else. Randolph, in his own way more a self-made man than Fred Wilpon, thought he was coming here to be a manager, not a kennel-keeper. He arrived a grown man and expected to work with other grown men, in his clubhouse and the front office.

On the surface, you would have to agree with him. We cannot 100% for sure know if this is true, but it sure seems true, doesn't it? That still does not change the fact that Willie is not a good tactical manager, but it certainly adds another dynamic to his non-self imposed

  • Here come the Yankees....

They are now three games over .500 and feel like a different team. There was some debate on the Boomer and Carton Show about who is in a better position to make the playoffs. The Mets and Yankees are both five losses behind the division leader, but the Red Sox were a more formidable opponent than the Phillies. However, the Yankees took a while to get a healthy team on the field and did not gel until late in the year and Mets are still mired in a funk with a healthy team.

Alou is done for and Church will be great to get back, but the shake ups on the Yankee side that are getting situated have a much greater impact to their push for the pennant than the Mets. The x-factor here is that the Yankees might have lost Wang for the majority of the remainder of the 2008 season, but I still have more faith in Kennedy and Hughes straightening out a bit more to give some meaningful innings than say Delgado or Castillo turning things around and dropping down some quality production.

The Yankees are looking to be in a much better position these days and I do not think it is all that much debatable. Wang is a big loss, but at least if they so choose, they have more bullets to get some sort of a deal done to replace his innings than the Mets would have to augment their current team and production via a trade.

The Latin American market is always interesting. I hope that Omar uses that signing period as an explanation as to why the Mets stick to the slot year after year. I'm all for saving money in the draft while making a splash with the Latin market later. Inoa and his Fernando-like hype would be a nice addition to our depleted farm system.

The entire bungling of the Willie situation is disheartening. It's bad enough the team is playing bad, but the fact they let this circus go on day-in and day-out makes me question people a lot higher up than Willie in the system. Why must our front office always look like a joke?

Free Kenneth Oberkfell from the chains of AAA! May the gods always smile upon Keith Hernandez and his 8-balls of blow!

Church back will be a steady addition to a lineup that is dismal after Wright in the 4-spot.

Losing Wang will be very, very bad for the Yanks. Mussina is already pitching beyond what any of them expected from him this year. Joba will have growing pains and scouts have been speaking negative about his straight-armed action allowing hitters to pick up on his stuff.
Hughes is hurt more often than he's healthy. And Kennedy doesn't impress me.

Speaking of which, $3,000 for All Star Game & Home Run Derby tickets on StubHub right now. That's silly.

loving the nixon trade, even if its a stop gap. his production should be suffice and his bat can be a threat. he should serve as a reminder to that scumbad delgado that some people love MLB

The only silver lining to a Mets loss is getting closer to correcting a mistake from over 3 years ago and that was hiring Willie Randolph.
Personally, I would prefer Willie to have his job forever becuase that would IMPLY he's winning. HOWEVER, if they're not winning he can just leave.

Willie's comments before and after every game make him sound like a player rather than a manager.

HOw about just making OBerkfell manager?

Regarding All Star game tickets Iwant to know when the hell they exactly went on sale, lol.

I've been feeling the negativity about Carlos Delgado, so I did some checking:

    Delgado's stats Apr 10 - 26
AB R H 2B HR RBI AVE OBP SLG
    65 5 9 1 2 9 .138 .243 .246

    Rest of year
AB R H 2B HR RBI AVE OBP SLG
    179 28 51 11 7 23 .284 .353 .474

    June
AB R H 2B HR RBI AVE OBP SLG
    51 8 16 5 7 26 .314 .397 .510

Maybe Carlos Delgado is not as much of a problem than many think.....

It is in the Mets DNA to look like a joke. I am resigned to that fact. I thought in 2006 would have begun to shake out of that, but alas, here we are again like nothing has changed.

I have many, many better things I would like to spend my money on.

I like the Nixon deal as well. It certainly cannot hurt, right?

Right...I was in turmoil about this. I want the Mets to win, but if they win, Willie stays. My dream is to start off slow, have him get axed, catch fire. BAM! Totally euphoria.

    Thought this was interesting...

    Player A:
    66 games played, 244 AB, 33R, 60 hits, 12 2B, 1 3B, 9HR, 32RBI, 28BB, 55SO, 1SB, 0CS, .246/.326/.414/.740.

    Player B:
    67 games played, 237 AB, 31R, 58 hits, 14 2B, 0 3B, 7HR, 30RBI, 42BB, 41SO, 0SB, 1CS, .245/.357/.392/.749.

Both players play at power positions, are in their mid to late 30's, and have always been seen as class acts with no steroid connections. Both players play on underachieving teams.

Fans seem to hate player A and want him released. He is generally thought to be a worthless piece of crap and is routinely booed at by his team's fans. The thought of trading him is seen as a joke because who would him?

The trade rumors swirl concerning player B. Release him? Ridiculous! He is seen as a beloved hero!

I'm sure this is easy and you all know that Player A is our own Carlos Delgado and Player B is Griffey.

I've always been a Delgado fan but i've been really down on him this year, too. Not judging anyone here.

Mike, it is in their DNA to look like a joke. This is nothing new! They have been like this since I started being a Met fan ('69). But for some reason it is in our DNA to love them. It sucks but it is true. You have no idea how many times I've wanted to jump ship but I just can't bring myself to do it and I never will. The worst part it that no matter how many times they disappoint us we never become immune to the pain (unlike Cubbie fans who seem to revel in it). Such is the life of a Met fan. We are a hopelessly hopeful beaten up but not down bunch.

That is the difference between playing in NY and Cincy though, no? You could be very under the radar in Cincy while that would not be the case in NY.

If Griffey was here, he would be getting slammed just the same. Also, there seems to be a sense that Delgado does not play hard which is not helping.

I am not sure if everyone would be easier on him if it was perceived he hustled more, but it seems is though commone preception is that he is a terrible fielder and simply does not try all that hard anymore.

    Banned? That would be Blowriffic!

I should have been more specific. The problem is not necessarily Delgado's offensive stats, he looks like he's straightened some of that out, not pulling every pitch, etc. The problem is that those numbers, while not so bad, are not enough to overcome his terrible defense.

Yeh, Mike, he tries hard on offense, but has never tried hard on defense.

In order to reach a state of total euphoria, we are all going to have to suffer a bit more.

    Trot Nixon kicks ass.

Don't know what kind of koolaid Willie has been drinking, but I don't agree that the team is somehow getting together. What we've seen in the last ten games is September redux: when the starters pitch well the bullpen blows it or the team doesn't score; when the team hits, the pitching sux ....

I suppose I have drank the Peterson koolaid because I don't think that he should go (though Warthen has developed a nice little track record). But more importantly, I just don't buy the fire the coach routine. "It's been done, Omar. If you want to keep your job why not go to the source?"

Frankly, the Bingo-Mets are my main source of interest these days though I only follow with box scores. I will one day drive down from VT, perhaps this summer, and actually see them play. New Hampshire games don't work for me this summer.

Of course why even engage with Carp, Niese, Murphy & Evans when you know the Mets will trade them for some aging schlubb? I mean, while everyone seems to cheer the Nixon trade, I want to see what we gave up for it.

And somehow Aguila, as a right handed hitter, made far more sense than Cancel. Sure fat catcher number 4 was the hero yesterday and enables the Mets to use Castro as a pinch hitter, but I personally like seeing an outfielder playing the outfield as opposed to Easley, Tatis and co.

To add to the first part of my comment: and the sudden collapse of BWagner certainly makes it feel like last Sept.

You'd kind of hope that Delgado continuing the trend that Sid notes might actually give him some value at the trading deadline however unlikely that is. Course the Mets would have to throw in a hefty load of cheeba to get that done. I'm all for a Carp/Evan platoon as we may be seeing that in our imminent (2009) future anyway.

Davidoff threw out the idea of Beltran to the Dodgers for Kemp, Loney and/or Billingsley, the perennial sportswriters' nocturnal emission, I guess. And I have to admit that if the Mets could do a deal as good as that (unlikely - check the DNA), I probably would come around to it even if I do still like Beltran a lot! (The idea of Pierre makes it all go rancid though, even as an American living in Paris, or especially so!)

Walked back home from the right bank of Paris with my wife this afternoon - I'm a regular rive gauchist! - and after walking under the Tour Eiffel, we came to the site of our annual professional beach volley ball tournament on the Champs de Mars. Stopped to watch for a couple of minutes. So this sport stays an Olympic sport while baseball rots? I mean, sure, it's got production values, but I was way more interested in the bikinis hugging between
    points than the points themselves!

I was just going to say the same exact thing. Another thing that makes Griffey a lovable fan favorite is that he dominated the 90s, was/is an all star every year (he consistently leads fan voting, hurt or not), and he has the 600 homers without (we think) any tainted PED use. Delgado was never in Griffey's league in terms of fan-loved status. Carlos had no Super Nintendo video game with fake players and a juiced up Jay Buhner, while Griffey did. Simple as that.

A Yankee fan of mine, when discussing Wang, still says he'd rather have Hughes and Kennedy than Johan, despite the season-ending injury. What are they putting in their drinks in the Bronx at the Stadium to believe that Kennedy is anything more than a #4 starter at best.

Those All Star tickets went on sale to season ticket holders. I highly doubt they'd even make it to sale to the public because of all the smaller packages (Sunday plans, etc.) and the corporate seating bullshit that will go on.

I like Nixon's hard-nose play. So long as he does not suck, he is ok in my book as well.

DG - I think Tatis has the arm to play the outfield, he would have thrown that guy out at third outright if he didn't double clutch before throwing it. It looks like he didn't know what to do.

The guys in Mezz section 13 were calling yesterday 'Black Sunday II' in the 7th inning of the first game yesterday. It's not quite as bad as the Sunday doubleheader against Seattle, but it felt almost as bad at that point.

Kemp, Loney, AND Billingsly? Tough to pass up. Who would play CF? Kemp has minimal experience there, though I think it'd work.

We'd have a very, very young core then. Reyes, Wright, Kemp, Loney, Johan (relatively speaking), Maine, Billingsley ... with Ike and Havens in the fold and Fernando a couple of years off.

Plus they can use the saved money to go after a SP in the off-season.
Would the Dodgers even consider giving those guys up though?

I'd go for that Dodgers trade, and I've been 100% against moving Beltran. I can't imagine they'd bite on that, though. I mean, as much as he sucks, they do have AndrUw in center for mega bucks already.

Delgado has been picking up the offensive numbers, hence the ascendance of my fanasy team from middle of the pack to king of the hill. You're right on, though, he gives it all back on defense. If he's not going to bother to get his uniform dirty, he's got to put up some big ass numbers at the plate.

I'm down with Nixon. Not sure the overall impact will be substantial, but it was worth a shot (pending news on the PTBNL), and I like the way he plays. It's sure as shit a better pickup than Jeff Conine, eh?

I get the feeling these Mets are going to get slaughtered by the Angels, and we'll start to see coaches depart. Maybe not Willie right away, as the reports say, but the snake's going to have to start shedding its skin soon ... about time.

    Too bad that'll never happen.

You and I both feel bad for him because the Mets are basically hanging him out to dry in a very unprofessional manner, typical of the Mets front office shenanigans (see: Bobby Valentine).

Either pledge full support for the guy and let him manage the entire season, or fire him now. This idea of judging him on a day-to-day basis is fuckin' retarded and undermines his authority in the clubhouse and dugout. How can anyone manage like that?!

But then again, it woudn't be the Jeff Wilpon run Mets if it wasn't.

Supposedly Wilpon had given the green light to fire Willie, but Omar is holding back because firing Willie means he is up next as the shooting range target.

I am bummed out that it looks like the Jacket may get whacked. Why? I don't get it. He's a very solid pitching coach that has done good work here. It will be hard to find someone as smart as Peterson is with pitching and how he handles young pitchers. His track record has been great. I don't get it and it's not like our rotation is sucking it up. Pelfrey is getting it together. Maine has been brought up by Peterson. He did a phenomenal job with Ollie last year and I don't see anyone doing much better with that head case. He seems good with the veterans. Pedro, Glavine and El Duque never seemed to have a problem with him nor does Johan. The bullpen always is going to be a crap shoot. I don't understand why he gets fired. It seems like firing people just for the sake of firing them. I think that would be a terrible move by Minaya and hope this doesn't happen. I believe it will further hurt this team and not help.

I'm all for bringing up Kenny O. If it means losing Nieto, go for it. Where the hell did Nieto come from anyway? Getting Oberkfell in there along with a player like Trot Nixon...these are good moves and seems like the kind of grit you want to start surrounding in the clubhouse. I say release/trade Delgado, call up Carp and find a way to get Kevin Millar here to platoon/mentor with him. Millar would be a welcome addition loosening up the clubhouse and getting some more tough attitude in there. If I see that big fucking smile on Delgado's face another day buddying up to the other teams players at first base all while we're in the middle of getting our asses kicked in the middle of a game I'm going to puke. F Delgado. Let's make things clear. He's dead weight. His HR's and RBI NEVER come when we need them. He hits them when we're down 9-2 and it doesn't matter. When it matters like yesterday, he hits into inning/rally ending double plays. Delgado SUCKS. Let's not get soft on him. He and his "we're so good we get bored" attitude needs to get tossed out of town. He is a major part of the problem and not a part of the solution.

And for that matter, Randolph was a cocky guy for a long time the last couple years and he was a huge part of the collapse with his attitude. Can his ass. I don't feel sorry for him. He'll get paid 4.5 million to sit home over the next year and a half. I'm not shedding any tears for that guy. Time to stick a boot up everyone's ass. Let's go.

I like Beltran a lot as well, but that deal would make me soil my undies. Kemp for Beltran AND Loney/Billingsley? Who could be that dumb? WHO?

RE: Beach Volley Ball...woman's beach volleyball is one of the greatest sports in the universe.

tc...Delgado was not exactly a hated man, but I do agree that Griffey was more iconic and it is not even close.

Kennedy is dencent, but nothing special. If you were willing to give up Hughes, you would have to throw in Kennedy unless you really did not want to do the deal anyway.

Church can play a passable center and I would do that to get my hands around Kemp who I expect to outperform Beltran at the plate over the next five years by a mile.

Anthony...thanks for bringing me back. That $4.5 million gives me reason to not feel sorry for him. You get paid the big bucks to deal with greater pressures.

And he is cocky...he has alluded that the Mets fans should be thanking him for turning around the club but then does not want any fault for the crapiness?

What makes you think there will be any slack taken off? The way the Mets handled this was Mickey Mouse at best. What this firing does is expose the Mets organization for the amateur hour operation that they are. This firing should have been done weeks ago, as opposed to having him fly across the country. You mean to tell me that they had not made this decision already and decided to let Willie hang in the wind like the retards that they are?

This team probably couldn't decide on a flavor of ice cream for a 4th of July picnic.

And then to top it off, they didn't fire Hojo who is a mediocre batting coach at best.

Willie being fired had to be done. But this organization made themselves look like big time idiots and the media should rightly tear them a new one. But then again…they wouldn't be the Mets if they did things the right way.

"The timing of Willie's firing was a calculated move. He was away from the mega-media circus. I think this move was meant to minimize the distraction as much as possible and I have no problem with it."

Minimize the distraction? You do realize that in the age of the internet and the global media, that this wil be a major distraction no matter where they are. Look, the Mets, for the past month or so have handled this like the way they handle other internal issues,…like assholes. I blame Omar and Jeffy Wilpon for this. And now we are beginning to see that Omat doesn't necessarily have the autonomy that we thought he was supposed to have when he as first hired.

Now Omar is in the hot seat BIG TIME. I am sure he did not want to fire Willie at all knowing that his job is not going to be "under review" each and every day this team underperforms. And I am glad. I want Omar gone as well.

Another example of the Mets screwing up is why Hojo was not fired when he did a worse job than Peterson>

ANd why bring up Oberkfell as just a coach? He should be the fuckin' manager instead.

WHy is Sandy Alomar still here?

Almar, I said "minimize". It is a relative term. I didn't imply that it wouldn't still be a media circus. If they did it in NY during primetime it would have been absolutely crazy. This wen ton way too long and there was too much build up. That was the real mistake the Mets made. Willie should have been gone in the off season. THAT'S what I have a problem with.

I whole heartedly agree with you about Oberkfell.

Fire HOJO? C'mon, how much effect can a hitting coach have on a team full of veterans?

Wow...I actually get some news during the day here. I was down after learning today that my school was sold...with it the relationship I had with the previous owner. Now, I can cheer up a bit knowing I don't have to listen to Willie ever again.

Apparently not enough since these veterans pretty much suck this season.

But I do believe there is no coincidence that Reyes' digression began when Hojo took over. Down got through to Reyes' while he was here.

But if you are going to fire Nieto, why not Hojo? And the one that disturbs me the most of the coaches firing is why Alomar was not fired.

    Omar protecting his buddies much?

But instead you have the luxury of still listening to Omar stutter his way through the mediocrity that he built while protecting his buddies on the coaching staff and trying to explain why the Mets embarrassed themselves with the way they botched the Willie situation up to go along with how they screwed up the Church fiasco.

Yeah, instead you get to go back to watching a mediocre aging team put together by Omar Minaya. Kudos buddy. Kudos.

What, you goofy fuckers think this is going to spur a playoff run? Please, Rickey knows otherwise. This is a bad day to be a Mets fan, end of story.

Enough with the Reyes digression. He's having the best offensive season of his career this year. Does he have to OPS 900 to be out of his funk?

Best offensive season of his career this year????

Did you just time warp back to 2006?

His numbers this year are virtually identical to 2006, and the GB/LD/FB rates that accompany that are better.

If you discredit Hojo for Reyes' poor finish to last year, then you must credit him for Reyes' re-emergence.

About time Willie got sacked, but a typically bungled procedure got it done.

They can't even do the right thing the right way, can they?

    Pssssh. Obie time.

RE: Reyes. Honestly, I think he had a terrible relationship with Randolph. My guess is he's cheering the most of any particular player, but I bet they'll all be happy (except for Wagner but who really gives a shit in that case?).

I think that HoJo would have been reassigned to coaching the bases again instead of getting canned. But it's hard to blame him for the bats of the downplaning old guys. He's been a decent hitting coach, no worse, no better than Down, who I also thought was fine.

I'd say we may have an outside chance at the Wild Card but am probably just fooling myself since I'm not ever going to succeed in just turning off the tv and not giving a shit! There's team spirit for you!: kind of cursed to paying attention...

I dunno. I still hold to the fact that the issues with this team go far, far beyond the manager or coaches at this point. I would like to see what our beloved GM Fubar will do at the trading deadline to address the glaring issues that are weighing this team down.

Am I alone is truly saying that today, with the way this played out and how the front office and ownership handled this, that I am kind of ashamed to be a fan of this franchise? I think someone put it succinctly by saying they felt as slimey about this whole thing as they did about the way the Knicks handled the Thomas debacle.

Ugh. Comparisons to the Knicks franchise is not what we as Mets fans hope this organization aspires to, but they seem well on their way there.

"SNY will go live at 1 pm EDT today with coverage labeled, “The Mets in Transition,” featuring all sorts of guests, which will air up until the team’s press conference at 5 pm EDT.

…i’m heading to the studio now, as i anticipate being on air a bit today…hopefully, i keep it together…i’m quite emotional."

Give him some Kleenex and put a diaper on him! Teach him how to write commentary without "golly," "gee," and "shucks" being inferred. Douchebag.

    Jajaja Almar and Rickey.

Only cheered up a bit (from my down day at work, not about the Mets). I haven't forgotten about the state of the team though I might be a bit delusional thinking Jerry Manuel will lead us to the promised land. I do look forward to seeing him get thrown out of a few games. Then perhaps, Obie will get a game here and there to manage.

Warthan and Perez...I at least hope something comes out of that

What if they erased the line so ollie didn't have one to jump over.

Or, they added another 2 or 3 lines, so he could do hurdles before and after pitching.

Those could be the first things tried. All else fails, I'd look at his pitching.

To those that think Manuel is this antithesis of Randolph, ask a White Sox fan if that is the case. Manuel is basically a lateral move from Willie. A laid back calm personality…WAIT! Isn't that Willie? Not what thois team needed right now. They should have thought out of the box with this one, but then again you actually have to have bright minds to do that.

Or just hire friggin' Obie who has a hard-nosed approach to the game.

Aw whom am I kidding. These are our Mets. MLB's joke for 2008.

Rickey - you speak the truth! Made me laugh...
Us goofy fuckers would sell our kids if it meant the Mets make the playoffs - which is not happening this year.
Willie was a decent guy/wrong manager.
Payback is a bitch, Omar, and for your reliance on a passive manager you can control, you get:
    BOBBY V!
    Better get out now...
