Tony B...Champion of the People

As the Mets Turn: Chapter 12
Who gives a crap and move on.

"There's nothing to that, honestly," Manuel told The Post. "I've always gotten along real well with guys like [Mets assistant GM] John Ricco, guys like Tony Bernazard, Omar [Minaya]. The conversations are always about baseball: What are we doing, where are we going, are we trying different things. I never had any of these meetings secretly. Everyone could always see us talking."

The paranoia has a firm grip on Willie and sensationalism is running rampant in the media. It was clear this was a mistake from the start and the Wilpons had a wiff of that.

Fred Wilpon was enamored of the idea of the Mets becoming racial groundbreakers by being the first New York team to hire a black manager - Randolph, like Wilpon, is also a Brooklyn native - and was mollified by Minaya's contention that he'd picked a manager who would be an asset in working with minority communities in the offseason.

Ooooooh that was problem #1. You hire coaches and baseball people as well as players for baseball reasons and not PR reasons. Perhaps the biggest flaw with the Mets is that they do things for the wrong reasons and for all this negative press on Bernazard, he seemed to be right.

Minaya's assistant, Tony Bernazard, was never a Randolph fan and had pushed for Montreal Expos third base/infield coach Manny Acta for the job. Acta was instead hired as one of Randolph's coaches.

Also, let us say he did lobby for Randolph's firing, a firing I thought should have happened a long time ago. Doesn't that make people feel better that he is fighting for what is right? Why should he champion a guy he believes is the wrong guy. Who cares how it happened, it had to happen and people have lost sight of that. Willie was lucky to even be the manager for any portion of 2008 and that is glazed over as the man was on borrowed time.

Tony is being painted as a bad guy and maybe he is. However, it would not be for lobbying for Randolph's dismissal. That was a solid baseball decision and something that is good for the team. They surely have other holes, but that was an easy one to plug up and a manager may not create a ton of value, but he certainly should not be adding negative value and I truly felt Randolph did that.

  • This is a tasty link.

“When a guy talks about coming to our place where he has a chance to win and compete against the Yankees and the Red Sox, and then he goes to a place like Kansas City, that’s an eye-opener,“ he was quoted saying in USA Today. ”We may have dodged a bullet with that one.”

Yep, whew, they dodged that bullet. Almost got stuck with Gil Meche and his 128 ERA+ last year. Of course, Ricciardi knew what few others could have understood — Meche would not have HAD that 128 ERA+ in Toronto because he did not have the heart and guts and competitive fire necessary to take on the Red Sox and the Yankees and all that. Yes, J.P. knows more than stats and tools. He can see into the hearts of men.

  • Moises might be done. I assume he will attempt to come back and the Mets will let him being they owe him a lot of money, but really, nothing is to be expected of him anymore. It is a shame though as he was a borderline Hall of Fame talent when healthy. He has career 128 OPS+ and was remarkably consistent. Here are his breakdowns of his career monthly stats:
    March/April .331/.394/.587
    May .295/.364/.449
    June .291/.349/.497
    July .300/.370/.531
    August .296/.365/.523
    Sept/Oct .316/.382/.529

He could have been a remarkable run producer if he had been able to stay on the field and it is too bad he will remembered as a fragile player who could not stay healthy and often pissed on his hands.

  • The SNY team has done a great job of being unbiased.

  • Me likely. It seems stupid and small, but I think it is a nice little gesture.

  • Oh....please. Enough with this backstabbing crap. And is everyone collectively tired of hearing Gossage speak about anything?

  • Luis should be a full time platoon guy. Hopefully Manuel puts that into practive soon.

  • Jerry calls Mets fans a pile of crap.

  • Mike Pelfrey is turning into a Major League pitcher. He has been looking good and controling games with his fastball that he seems to be getting more swing and missess on.

  • The Mets are only 3.5 games out, but I am tempering any excitement until they prove they can be consistent. The issue is not getting hot while someone else is cold. That is too be expected, but staying consistent for a month will be the thing that lets me sleep at night.

Tempered yes, but there is a sense that a storm cloud has dissipated. Enough if it was just psychological (and it's not), the firing places a distance between last Sept and now. And then Manuel is not paranoid and wary of everyone. It's like the whole team took one large exhale!

And I have to say I love the new pitcher hands the ball to the reliever bit. A rather heady way to bypass the manager and make it apparent that the players are responsible to each other.

Personally, I think that Jerry was trying to light some fire in Mr. Moises, but the ineluctable truth is that the Mets cannot depend on a 41 year old injury prone player to make or break their season. I think that Endy is going to get more and more playing time, especially as he is beginning to hit. Willie seemed to be playing anyone but EC earlier this year. No surprises that he's coming around.

And at least we can plug in Ruben Gotay at second now that Castillo is likely for the DL. Oh wait, we can't! No other move exemplifies where this team's priorities got screwed than the dumping of a guy who batted .320 (or thereabouts) last year. When AndyHernandy comes up to pinch run and field, we'll all have that in our craw.

    And one modification:

"Luis should be a full time platoon guy." You forgot to add: "on another team!"

i will get excited at 10 games over 500. i dont think that is an unreasonable goal for this team to shoot for.

I love the handing the ball over bit. I am buying into Jerry as our leader. I cant imagine how frustrating it must have been to sit on the bench with Willie, he must have been waiting for this for a while now. Motivation... something the mets have been lacking for a long time.

Whenever Alou is healthy he should play. Having him to insert is not going to hurt us.

Its been awhile since we have lossed a series so baby steps are good, King Felix goes to night and he is nasty...if we win tonight we should sweep the M's... then the Yanks and Phils are next... it seems that we should be grateful for interleague play it has given this team some life.

Couldn't agree any more regarding how bad a move it turned out hiring Willie for straight up PR moves. You never hire a manager with no prior experience, let alone one in New York, where the media devours and spits out managers at the first sign of dissension.

Johan v. Felix tonight @ Shea. I'll be showing up in my suit from work for this one.

    Thanks, Jerry.

I am a fan of handing the ball off to my bullpen. I did it the few times I ever pitched in high school just because I thought it was a good show of team unity / support.

    Big Pelf throwing nice lately!

If Pelf steps up like it looks that he is, man, that changes the complexion of this ballclub. Very exciting to see what he's done over the last 5 games. That's not a small portion size in my opinion for a kid finding his way.

I like Manuel and his attitude so far. Obviously, the team's 3-2 since he's taken the reigns, so all excitement should be tempered. But at the very least, it definitely looks like the team is a lot more relaxed on all fronts and comfortable.

The Willie story is old. Really crazy how lame the NY media can be. So overblew that whole firing. Now they're jumping all over Bernazard. It's like a bandwagon that they all jump on. Ridiculous. Couldn't agree with you more Mike. He may or may not be a good guy, but from what I'm reading he sounds credible and on the money with baseball.

Let's see them take a couple more series this week. Sure would be nice to actually have a bit of fun and enjoy our baseball team for a change. Sugar P still hasn't gotten hot (and he will), starting pitching is looking real good, Church will be back fresh, Beltran is playing up to par, Endy/Easley are coming around and Luis will hopefully be DL'd...things are looking up!

A couple of observations on the 3 games I attended in Denver this weekend.

Winning 2 of 3 from the Rockies was good, because they have been playing good ball lately.

That was one bitchin pink back pack that Joe Smith was wearing this weekend.

Castillo needs to give Shinjo his orange wrist bands back.

Matt Holliday is a very good hitter, but a butcher in the field.

It's good to see Trot Nixon on the team. At least he has a pulse. I hope it rubs off.

If it wasn't for bad defense, Pelfrey would have pitched into the 7th. He pitched much better than the numbers would indicate.

The Rockies' bench (Podsednik, Spilbourghs, Quintanilla, etc) is better than the Mets'.

Maybe he's not as evil as everyone makes him out to be.

This whole JP Ricciardi thing is wierd. I mean he's on the radio making comments on another team's player (Adam Dunn). I thought there was a rule called tampering? Whether its positive or negative comments, its still tampering, no?

A week or so ago I wrote a bit comparing Griffey's and Delgado's stats (which were almost identical) and noted how different each player was treated by his respective fans. You guys basically said that it was a good example of the difference between playing in Cincy and NY (I knew that, but I threw it out there anyway so we could write about something other than how bad the Mets suck - you know, just for a short break).

Here's another good example: I was at the game that the Reds brought Andy Phillips up. The guys I was with (all diehard Reds fans) were excited about the Reds bringing another prospect up. "Prospect?" I said, "He's a suck ass journeyman scrub Yankees cast off." They refused to believe me and were pissed that I was raining on their parade. They had to learn the hard way, I guess.

Mets fans? We know when we're bringing in a scrub! Maybe they're bringing him in to push Tatis.

Now let's get back to discussing how bad the Mets suck this year.

Adam Rubin at the Daily News:

Tony Armas Jr. could be called up from AAA New Orleans in order to spot start on Tuesday in St. Louis. After which, Armas could fill-in as a long reliever out of the bullpen ... Armas will most likely take Carlos Muniz’s new found spot on the roster.

So much for that. We need a Free Muniz movement that rivals the old love we had for one Jeffrey Keppinger (who was doing well for the Reds until he got hurt this year, by the way). What the fuck is with Omar and his affinity for shitty, old, non-roster-worthy additions of Montreal cast-offs.

What does Ollie mean when he says he was always trying to be a different pitcher? Is it just that he tries to be too perfect and too fine and then when he misses, he unravels, unlike this last game when he just threw relaxed and had fun? Is it THAT simple with OP?

I can imagine him going out there relaxed every game. Sometimes, they don't hit him like today. Other days he gets knocked around and also walks some. What does he do then? Can he recover? My impression is that he doesn't have much success after things start to go badly.

If you're implying they "look" better, sure. But the bottom line is they're still .500 under Manuel, and under .500 on the season. And that's what I call under-performing and underwhelming.

But the more important point is that they can't get over the hump. This series in Philly right before the All Star break is huge. If they win 3 of 4, then confidence is abound. But if they split or go 1-3, or God forbid get swept, it'll just be the same old shit out of this team.

Also, anyone see the Post today? It appears Reyes and Keith had a little squabble on the team plane. The fact Hernandez is still ready to throw down is swell. Not so swell is the negative media attention for Reyes. He gets it bad lately.

Good stuff Pelf! I'm liking his efforts, and he's holding his own over his like 4 or 5 starts (minus that one vs. the Angels).

    What's that again?

Wow am I glad I didn't watch this game. Tempted to, but I'm sticking to my guns. Independence Day, celebrate our birth, good food, good friends, and my 10 week old boy who had his first dip in the pool!

What a fantastic day! If I had chosen to actually watch this game tonight, my entire evening would have been ruined, and that would have messed up my day. Because that's how hard I root for this team. That's how hard I've rooted for them for... well, way too long.

Now I turn on the tube just to check out the score and I find out they lose 3-2. Then I go online to check out the box score, and big surprise! No offense, but even worse is the fact that while they only gave Santana 2 runs, at least he was leading 2-0!!!

So what does our so-called Ace do? Gives it right back! Typical heart breaker courtesy of the Mets.

Fuck them, fuck Santana, and fuck the Wilpons and their ticket price hike after that awful collapse, just to go and put this product on the field this season.

I like the fact we have so few all stars. Let DW rest and let Reyes spend some time with his wife and Kid. Damn, it helps us not having all stars!

Either Mike is off somewhere in the world for a couple weeks or he said f it and couldn't take blogging about this team anymore. Hopefully he's meeting beautiful women in Sri Lanka or someplace exotic and when he gets back this week the Mets will have officially taken over the lead in the division.

Could be Amsterdam, smokin Ls and hanging out in the coffee shops with one of the Mets random international signings that hit .164 but bring them media attention (those guys from Australia, etc.)

    Hookers + Thailand - Infection?

Something in that equation will never work out.

Lincecum tonight. He has the ability to easily get 10-15 k's depending on what lineup Manuel throws out there.

I'm going to the game tonight. The Mets are 1-7 so far this season at games I've attended. Up against Lincecum tonight...not feeling the chances of the teams winning record to improve for me. But Big Pelf is looking solid. Could be a fun night watching two talented young guys go at it. Plus beers on a Tue night at the park in summertime never sucks.

Help me! I'm on the verge of becoming hopeful! Delgado has risen from the dead (on pace now for a 29/90 season), Wright is Wright, Beltran is Beltran, Endy is showing that he gets better the more he plays, and Reyes is fucking red hot Reyes. They slammed arguably the best NL pitcher last night. Oh, and Mike should at least sign on to gloat about being right about Pelfrey. Let's see if they can feast on the bottom feeders for the next few series.

Mike's way too wise to get married, right?

    Tom Glavine’s ERA is 4.45
Frenchy Franceur is a AA slugger
    Atlanta just signed Julian Tavaraz
    The Braves closer is????
The Braves are 5 games under .500
Mike Hampton is making $16M and can’t pitch because his booby hurts
The Braves have NINE pitchers on the DL

Chris thinks I am kidding but I would like him to split from Mike Francesa.

And, the point of the call was Johan Santana was struggling due to his TEAM, just like Chris does with Mike during this 'crossroads'
    time.

Writer Chris Illuminati of Philly Blurbs said this after viewing the video, "video proof that the Dog won't bark about any particulars of the rough patch he and Mike are going through."

That's sensitive." and then added, "I've talked to him about it, but I don't forget that. He went out of his way to bury that book, same day I was on the Today show. C'mon. But listen, Neil thinks he has something, so he's going to track me down in the middle of a weekend and he's going to track Mike down in the middle of a weekend and he's going to write something."

I bought last minute HR Derby tickets yesterday for $140 a pop in the 3rd row of the upper deck.

The show put on by Josh Hamilton was absolutely absurd. 518 foot homer. 13 in a row. 16 of 17. 20 of 22. And 22 of 25.

    Best $140 ever spent.

Furthermore, how is it possible that Tejada is an all-star over Reyes?

I went to the HR Derby as well. That was amazing. One of the coolest things I think I've ever witnessed. That guy is such a cool story. Seems like the crack loving heroin addicts are always the most talented folks. I'm going to the game tonight as well. I got totally hooked up both nights thru business connections. Good stuff. Lots of Mets representing everywhere which was good to see.

Speaking of crack loving peeps. I am legit worried. Where the f is Mike??!!!

That was ridiculous that steroid has been Tejada was in the game and not Reyes who yet broke another historic record by having 10 HR's, 10 triples, 30 stolen bases and batting over .300 before the break. How the hell was this guy not in the game? Seriously. So lame.

I went to the game last night. Got free tix thru business. I am blown away that people actually spend thousands of dollars on these games. Once you're there and watching the game, it's just a ballgame. Same $8.50 beers, hot dogs, ice cream, etc. Nothing free, no great food/booze, no red carpet. Just a ball game that nobody really gives that much of a shit about. Unreal that people actually drop that cash on it. Plus, the crowd is so ridiculously white bread, it's pretty boring in the stands. Still a good time though to experience (for free). Definitely cool seeing all the hall of famers.
